• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Not a straight edge - a cautionary tale.

To be fair, he did end up with a nice-looking usable tool. Even if the label is wrong now. 😁

He lost me when he started sanding and the cutting the ends off.

    1950s Joinery Workshop

Apologies to those without Farcebook. Some scary stuff here and I'm sure the bloke operating the circular saw had had a close encounter. Link to scary workshop stuff.

    Awesome Woodcarving

I hate Facebook. Seems he has an instagram page that might work better: https://www.instagram.com/jakeweidmann/?hl=en

    Awesome Woodcarving

One of the reels from this chap popped up today and I fell down a bit of a rabbit hole watching a lot of his other ones. I am in awe of his skills, there is some truly amazing work there. https://www.facebook.com/jakeweidmann/reels/ The family crest is truly awesome but I think the one I...

Lie Nielsen No. 60 1/2 Block Plane

Ah of course. Their protection fee, whatever that actually is.

Lie Nielsen No. 60 1/2 Block Plane

Blimey, that is one abused plane. It certainly needs rescuing! I managed to find it on eBay. He's dropped the price to £89.10 now. I'm not sure why the 10p though. A £20 offer got rejected as well. 😁 It will be interesting to see what it goes for in the end.

    eBay listings and bladed items

Oh no. This could become horrendous if implemented. It could mean the end of so many things. No more finds in the local flea markets or small artisan tool makers. I shall also respond with feedback. As many as possible should in the hope that the government won't go to far work this.

    Antique Stanley Line Level

Many thanks Andy. That is really good. It is also great to get the confirmation about the patents. That DATAMP website looks like it needs a serious look at. I shall pass this on to my friend. I have told her she should join here as there are many like-minded souls so she won't need to collect...

    Antique Stanley Line Level

A friend of mine that it turns out has a similar interest in old hand tools as me has acquired a nice old Stanley Line Level. I think a previous owner has done some sprucing up with some Hammerite that has resulted in the numbering becoming indistinct but some searching led me to this...

Plane iron getting "wrecked" when shooting: what can it be?

I was wondering about that too so looked for more info. Apparently it's measuring changes in the Earth's magnetic field that occur due to the presence of ferrous metals. If I remember my physics correctly, the ferrous metal will provide an easier path for the magnetic field and that has the...

Plane iron getting "wrecked" when shooting: what can it be?

I discovered the other day that phones have a magnetic field sensor that means that metal detector apps are a thing. This is my phone telling me that my Swiss champ army knife is definitely metal. No idea how sensitive it is and it only seems to work on ferrous metals but I thought it's pretty...

    Cracked Woody Rebate Plane

Thanks both, as I suspected really, but I thought I'd ask. Luckily, I have another. Cleaned up now, blade fettled and sharpened. Cutting like a dream. Actually, I have a third but that turned out to be worse than the first. Shame really. I may try the brass plate idea as the first is a...

    Cracked Woody Rebate Plane

I've had this woody hanging around for quite some time and as I have a job it will be ideal for, I thought I'd clean it up and get it working. Unfortunately, on examination, it has a crack in the body that extends through to the mortice that holds there wedge. Anyone have any thoughts on if...

The problem with old houses - part 2

And me. When we moved into our house, we decided to change the carpet in one of the bedrooms. We lifted it to discover a large hole in the floor that had been covered with a street sign. Then there was the mirror on the wall of one of the quarter landings that lead to the main landing. Couldn't...
