• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    NHS - truly amazing service

Hope all goes well Adrian. My experience with the NHS and Prostate Cancer wasn't quite as rapid but from the initial discovery of a 'raised' (or enlarged) prostate by my GP (the same one I saw today ref blood pressure) to a Radical Prostatectomy to remove it was approx six weeks - Rob

    The Niff-Naff Cabinet; door hinging!!

The next job is to chop the hinge recesses to the length of the leaf + not quite half the diameter of the pin. This give a bit of 'wiggle room' for a final fit, so firstly the LN cutting gauge is set to the distance described: ...which is then marked onto the recesses, inc the door...

These are the hinges I use Scott, but Lee Valley also make a range that are less expensive but still pretty good - Rob

Agreed, that's another option. Some of the better quality tapes are pretty thick as well - Rob

In the pic above, I took out the paper shim and moved the veneer piece along towards the hinge knuckle; all the slack was taken up and the fit was pretty much spot on - Rob

    The Niff-Naff Cabinet; door hinging!!

After looking at it for a while, it seemed pretty clear that it was 'tight' on the top right corner: ...as that's the one where the veneer shim didn't want to fit, so I reverted to the Workmate/router combo and took three minute cuts just off that corner and about half way along the rail...

    The Niff-Naff Cabinet; door hinging!!

Hinging the door is without a doubt the trickiest part of the whole project and needs to be approached taking teeny-tiny steps. Firstly, one of 'horns' from the door made a few days ago is used to mark off the width of the hinge recess, using a V point Japanese marking knife, with a piece of...

    The Niff-Naff Cabinet; door hinging!!

Thanks chaps, appreciated. I've made a couple of these things now using these techniques, so although it's by no means 'second nature' it's not quite as onerous as it looks; what makes it very difficult above all else is the nature of the timber and as I didn't have very much of it in the first...

    The Niff-Naff Cabinet; door hinging!!

Today's task was to machine the rebate in the door for the glass. This is a little bit ticklish as the cutter bearing and Allen bolt: ...drops below the level of the door and only half of it will be in contact for the final couple of cuts, so a suitable cramping arrangement needs to be...

Looking for info and experiences with different Narex chisels?

I found a few Ax scribing gouges and and old Marples bevel edge chisel on the 'Tool Wall'; literally as quick as Bill Carter demonstrated to turn them into 'blunt' chisels, but I used the Ax 'Ulitimate Edge' and a 180g loading - Rob

Looking for info and experiences with different Narex chisels?

I think I'll have a delve into the 'tools I don't use' toolbox and see what's lurking; I know there are one or two chisels and gouges in there - Rob
