• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Terminology - Two countries, separated by a common language

On an American forum a while back I was hauled into line for misspelling catalogue. The respondent told me the correct spelling was "catalog". I was extremely happy to point out that the "catalog" I was referring to was from 1897 when the Yanks still spelt the word correctly. Cheers, Geoff.

    Screw driver

An update on this screw driver, a friend has lead me to the American patent for this tool. Frederick William Russell of Redditch, England in 1921. To date I've still had no luck finding a UK patent. Reading the patent specification he says that the screw holder could be used in a brace or a...

    Keen Bench Drill

Nearly four years ago (March 29. 2022) I posted a photo of a chain drill branded Robert Scaife. Colne. UK, which uses a very similar advance mechanism as your drill RXH. I've posted another photo of it. I think it uses the 1896 patent of Walter Fifield of Augusta Maine USA...

    Unusual winter weather.

I left the snow behind in New Zealand over fifty years ago and have been reading this thread and feeling very un-envious. On Christmas day Western Australia had the worlds fifteen hottest towns and today is forecast to get up to 33C. Cheers, Geoff.

One for Andy and Toolsnat - mainly.

That looks like a Millers falls No 512 corner brace and yes, Andy's right, the gear covers are missing. https://oldtoolheaven.com/millers-falls/brace/brace5.htm The original corner brace was patented in the USA by Charles Amidon in 1884...

    Screw driver

Thanks very much for this info Andy, I'll have to try to work out how you'd swap the nozzles out. Looking at the photo in the catalogue, I think mine is missing what looks like a knurled nut at the rear of the driving mechanism. Mine's also got the ratchet, so it's a model No 2. This has been a...

    Screw driver

Over the last few months my attention has been drawn to this brace based screw driver. The general opinion seems to be that it is British, there is no brand that I can see, the only marks are M, 26, on one side of the head casting and 9 & 12 on the other. The brace has a 5inch sweep, a pair of...

    Rainwater harvesting

Phil, we harvest rainwater, the tanks come equipped with shallow lea &, debris catchers with a fine mesh that mossies can't fit through. We've also got deep catchers which I put in the tanks when they are close to empty. This is because in a heavy downpour they handle leaves etc better. When the...

Moving snow at my parents home.

Duke, your selfie reminded me of ploughing in NZ when I left school in the mid 60's, no cab on the tractor and fingers frozen to the steering wheel. Came to Western Australia in 1969.............the tractors have cabs and the sand-gropers rarely see snow.

Thanks Andy, I'll let him know. Cheers, Geoff.

    Anderson Expansive Bit

Andy, I showed your Ibbotson bit to Eric Brown and he thought it might be the same as one on his list made by Henry Boker of Germany. For anyone interested in Erics Auger bit list it can be found on this Millers Falls site: https://oldtoolheaven.com/auger-bits/openerimg/AugerMakerReference.pdf...

    Anderson Expansive Bit

I've not seen that version before, you need to find some more to compare with each other.

    Anderson Expansive Bit

Yes, we have discussed this previously Andy, I'd be pretty careful about giving it a go, my three specimens are all missing their spur. Either broken or sharpened off.

    Anderson Expansive Bit

On March 20th 1889 Robert J. Anderson of Liverpool was granted the patent for this Expansive bit. In simple terms, he attached a swinging cutter to a pre-existing centre bit to allow it to cut varying diameter holes in wood. Thanks to researcher and Auger bit enthusiast, Eric Brown, for sending...

    Adjustable Bit

It looks like you've got it all sorted, so the only thing I can add is that I think the patent for this bit is probably William Steers' 1884 https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/6b/82/61/f6b91db1e590aa/US296242.pdf Cheers, Geoff.

How do you light you fire?

For fire lighters we save our tea bags, dry them out and fill a small screw top jar with as many as will fit and pour a little bit of kerosene in. Shove one in under the kindling, light it with a match, job done.

    Spoke shave "The Wonder"

Thanks for your reply Andy, we have a similar problem looking up patents here in Australia. I think it's in Bob's collection more for the unique construction than the useability, he brought it to a HTPSWA meeting on Thursday night and I must say it's a very pretty tool. Cheers, Geoff.

    Spoke shave "The Wonder"

I've got another spoke shave question. This is not mine, it belongs to my friend Bob. The main body is aluminium with the sole cast into it, the cap bronze and the blade steel. you can see that the cap says "THE WONDER. BRITISH MADE" in addition, Bob has given me a patent number 10525 which I've...
