• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Not a straight edge - a cautionary tale.

My partner saw a little wooden spirit level in a junk shop. All nicely polished wood and the brass ends polished, too. Of course, she bought it, thinking I would love it. It was, indeed, a lovely-looking tool, but she had wasted her money. It was so out of true it made orange politicians look...

Not a straight edge - a cautionary tale.

30-odd years ago I found myself building toilets in the sand in Mexico, at an orphanage. Two very large burger-loving American ladies looking after 70-odd little children. I was part of a team aged from just out of school to not quite retirement. I had some skills so I was laying concrete...

Yes, a Flat Top Grind blade is the right tool for the job. Not as easy to find as they used to be, as a lot of manufacturers now make rip blades with ATB. I have a precious one that I keep just for such jobs. S

    Lost! Now found.

Recently I could not find my Allen keys. I remember using them fairly recently, but they were nowhere to be found. I considered buying a replacement set, figuring that as soon as I'd done that, they would turn up. Then I was looking for some odd-sized machine screws. I have a plastic box of odds...

    Smart Phone - done!

I used to have a phone, I forget which one, where I could have 2 physical SIM cards (so for me they were UK and France) AND an SD card. Now most phones seem to allow a physical SIM and EITHER another SIM or an SD card. So at the mo I have a UK SIM (which is increasingly redundant) and a French...

If your 45 supports were mitred so that they go right down to the table they would give support to the back of the cut as the saw exits the workpiece. Of course, if your depth of cut is high enough to make that unnecessary, just ignore this twaddle of an old man. S

That's all worth knowing, thank you. S

    Church Noticeboard

Here's a thought. How are notices going to be attached? Drawing pins? Mapping pins are better. But you need a soft back, such as cork. Another option would be for the back to be steel. Magnetic notice boards are ten a penny. The notices could be attached by magnets. If it is facing North, then...

    Church Noticeboard

That's what I used when I built my workshop in Kirkby. They are held in place with copper rivets. It's a fantastic product. Mine were called Cemtiles, but there are probably other brands, too. BTW, I'd make the roof a LOT bigger, it's not just water you want to keep out, it's UV radiation as...

    Church Noticeboard

Church noticeboards. Ye gods. I have made 3 in my time. I used to go to church, now I won't be seen dead in one. Literally. Humanist funeral for me. You have two enemies. The weather and the Church itself. The weather will get in every nook and cranny. You don't need a lid on it, you need a...

Well I've woken up this morning to no water. Our water is from a spring up in the woods. There is also mains water in the village, and we do have a connection, but we can't use it for two reasons. 1 We don't have an account with the water company, and 2 When we tried to see if it was actually...

    Hot Heat 2026

I've just sat outside in 35C very comfortably for 20 mins. How? I soaked a bath towel in cold water and wrapped myself in it. The initial shock was, well, shocking, but after a few moments I could feel the heat draining from me. I'm now back in my office but this is the most comfortable I've...
