• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    What I have fixed today

When I bought this money-pit of a house, I also bought the P/T from the owner. I already had a nice lity Kity, but this was a serious bit of 12" kit. When I got here, I discovered that it really didn't work very well. Upon inspection, it was obvous why - the beds were not in line with each...

    How much???

It would be good to know just how many they do sell. But as I say, it's not aimed at the likes of you and me, it's aimed at people with a very healthy income and no knowledge of working wood who love the likes of you and me. S

    Dogs’ understanding of time

I've never had a dog, but this is very entertaining! Nearly all our neighbours have dogs. Big ones, little ones, agressive ones, affectionate ones, old ones, young ones, blind ones, deaf ones, bonkers ones. I'm beginning to see the appeal.

    Modern cooking — a rant.

I think it is a generational thing, Ian. We both, along with many others on here, are the post-war baby-boomer generation. We grew up on meat-and-two-veg, and cheap cuts like brisket to boot. Cooked over a candle for a week. We live in the Limousin region, Haute-Vienne. Quite a beefy area. But...

    Modern cooking — a rant.

We've had visitors for the weekend and we went to restaurant on Saturday evening. We both had sea bass which was delicious if a bit of a challenge bone-wise. One of our guests ordered the duck and when asked how she wanted it, said "bien cuit" (well done). The waiter simply said "non". He...

    Click-to-fit floor tiles

Are you talking about a latex adhesive or a latex paint? I have bought a big tub of latex paint to seal the floor before the levelling goes on. Is this what you mean? S

    Click-to-fit floor tiles

Oh yes, it needs that, and how... I thtink these things are HDF, High-Density Fibreboard I've been cutting up lots of MFC lately, I wish I had shares in a blade manufacturer. A brand new blade makes a decent cut, but it doesn't take many cuts before the cut quality deteriorates very...

    Click-to-fit floor tiles

Thank you for that, Tony, Duke. I had knock-off Karndean at my place in the UK and after 7 years it looked as good as the day it was laid. It had fake grout lines, laid separately and it looked for all the world like a stone flag floor, only warm and easier on the feet. It was excellent. But an...

    Click-to-fit floor tiles

I'm going to lay a new floor in our kitchen and I've found some tiles I like: https://www.bricoflor.fr/nature2floor-mineral-click-marbre-blanc-sous-couche-integree.html They are rated for commercial use (factories, canteens etc) so should be no problem in a kitchen. They have a 2mm built-in...

Workshop Companion reaches a million subs!

BTW, that 9.5k is taxable income. Fortunately it is very easy to show that it has cost me more to make those videos than the revenues they produce. Just who is making money here? It sure aint me! I think that if you do really want to succeed at this online stuff, it has to be a full-time...

Workshop Companion reaches a million subs!

All the above is, so very sadly, true, and I recognise that. But I've never done YouTube for the money, I've genuinely wanted to share what little I know about woodwork and share the way I work, for anyone who may find it interesting. I get the occasional blip in viewership, and consequential...

Which is probably why they are still trading rather than going under. Every business has to make a profit. S

Workshop Companion reaches a million subs!

I don't mean to hijack the thread for a good moan. More power to his elbow, really. I'm glad that there is woody channel being so successful. But I have pretty much decided to stop making videos. I admire people like Peter Millard who can produce stuff every week. I can't do that. I film when I...

    Stain sample pots?

There are a number of home-made recipes for traditional wood stains. As Chas says, steel wool in a jar of vinegar for a week or two will yield a nasty-looking slosh that works nicely on oak. For mahogany, a few crystals of potassium permanganate dissolved in water gives a rich brown colour*...

    Acetone

Yes Amazon, or nail polish remover. Here in France I can buy all kinds of stuff in my local little supermarket. Acetic acid in high concentrations (you don't want to be putting 30% stuff on your chips), cellulose thinners, linseed oil (it doesn't say raw or boiled) and hydrochloric acid. In 5l...
