• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Changing opticians - a cautionary tale

A couple of years while on a caravan site near Whitehaven my wife suffered breathing difficulties having been stung by a wasp. I took her to Whitehaven A&E and I can only say she received excellent and very quick attention. They kept her in overnight due to concern about her blood pressure...

    carers

My wife worked as a carer part time for a while, she is a qualified nurse, before getting fed up with the incompetence of the local government management of the service. She would start a 30 minute job at 9:00 and the next job would be scheduled for 9:30 five miles away. Clients who were...

"Chewed wires caused blaze". Myth or truth

I did an electrical inspection on a building and failed it on a low insulation resistance on most of the circuits. Further inspection revealed squirrels has been eating the insulation where the cables ran through the void under the roof. The photo shows the state of part of the wire on just one...

    Butterflies

I read this last year and at the time of the OP I had seen very few but the number picked up slightly a month later but nowhere near as many on the buddleia as in previous years. Just went outside and none on the buddleia but one flew past to settle on a white window frame and I saw one...

    British Airways website anomaly

Using Brave on an Apple Macbook I get the BA page with ability to start entering dates etc. Not that I would normally choose BA and I try to avoid flying not because I dislike it but I do hate being treated worse than cattle at airports.

    Rising damp

I have rising damp despite having a very good DPC. When building the bungalow in 1950 the builders applied the scratch coat of sand & cement before the floor was laid and applied it across the DPC. The concrete floor was then laid without a DPC, the skirting fitted and the final plaster coat...

Ever seen a consumer unit in a bathroom?

If my memory is correct an enclosure in a bathroom is outside the zones. The usual case is a washing machine connected to a socket all of which is in a cupboard with a door. I cannot remember if the cupboard needs a proper latching handle. However the environmental conditions and manufacturers...

    royal mail woes

I have usually had good service from RM parcel delivery but the mail comes two or three times per week. The 24 and 48 hour deliveries seem very unreliable. The rest of the delivery services are hit and very miss. The local WhatsApp group regularly has appeals for have you seen our parcel, often...

    Old chair refurbishment

Many thanks for the suggestions I will be following them both up. It has been covered with some sort of stain, that does not look original, at some point and there are signs of wood worm on the bottom rails but the exit holes are very very small.

    Old chair refurbishment

During a visit to the local tip I made the mistake of taking my wife. She saw, and I had to buy this old chair. She saw a similar chair on the TV last night and liked it. She wants me to sand it down and put polish on it. Apart from the difficulty in sanding properly I do not really want to...

    Pharmacy2u

I order mine through the NHS app monthly and the local, to me, independent pharmacy dispenses it. Most of the staff in the pharmacy know me by name, I don't know what that says about my health. The doctor normally approves within one day and the pharmacy often has it dispensed the same day as...

Index Map Search at the Land Registry

The land registry title plans are not necessarily accurate. Partially due to the accuracy of any OS maps on which they are based and partially due to the thickness of any lines on the plans submitted for title registration. In addition they can make mistakes especially on old registrations where...

    You chicken chaps....

I knew a lady who was, pre covid, doing organic free range chickens in Shropshire and was selling them at farmers markets for about £18 each. I do not think she is in business now. She would have found it very difficult to keep them in during the Avain Flu restrictions and Covid restrictions...

Does this look like an old-style fuse box?

The red switch on the right looks like the main switch, the next white item to the left looks like a MCB plug in fuse replacement. The metal looking items on the left are probably fuse holders. The consumer unit can be replaced with a modern. The main consideration for a rewire is the...

Food from your early years as an adult or child?

I too can remember NHS orange juice, horrible stuff. My childhood memories include, Soda bread, potatoes cooked and served in their skins, fish on Fridays and my mother's apple pie. School meals: cheese tray bake served to the table in the tray. 1/2 the table including me would not touch it so...

    ZEN

I have used them for years, slightly more expensive than many but well worth it. Support have always stayed on the phone till the problem was solved even if waiting for a slow computer to boot or when the problem was my ignorance/problem.

Never assume - stupidity strikes again to accident prone A

I had a near mis when disconnecting a wall light circuit. I removed the one lighting fuse, tested the circuit for dead, is was but I wondered why the live had not been jumpered across to the second switch on the plate. When finished customer asked me if I could replace the 2 gang switch with a...

    Two layers of floorboards?

I have worked on a few old upmarket houses in Cheshire over the years and never seen double floor boards. It may have been a regional or local thing.

    Wales 20mph speed limit

The Parish council tried to get a 20 mph speed limit in my local village in England. It was refused. They would not allow it as hey would need traffic calming measures to ensure that the traffic could not exceed 20mph and the Parish would need to pay for them. The police said they would not...
