• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Travel insurance.

For a two week cruise next year we have been quoted between 400 and 600 for the two of us both 70+ with medical conditions. If we go this year the most expensive was 700 but one was 243 for this year. Have a look totaltravelprotection.com for an idea.

    Essential kitchen tools - 2024

Locally there is a "Resource Recovery Park". They are building a hydrogen generation facility to take recyclable plastics as the raw material. This is in addition to a hydrogen generation plant, which in time will work its way through the various colours of hydrogen, being built. These hydrogen...

    parking charge

The compostable bags seem to compost quite quickly in my pot by the sink that I use to put tea bags into. When I remove the bag, twice per week, it is usually leaking and incapable of holding the tea bags. A waste of time basically. I have never put them on the compost heap so no idea of their...

Pollinator problems - looks like an iffy year

Commonly known in farming communities as: Department for the Elimination of Farming and Rural Affairs I do not think it is political as no political party appears to be interested in farming other than planting trees, re-wilding, building solar farms and houses on farm land. Don't worry though...

When day-to-day life changes in an instant

Best wishes to you both and good to hear she is starting her recovery. An example of how things can change in an instant: My BIL was cutting his hedge while on a short step ladder and fell off. He broke 11 ribs on one side two of them twice giving him a flail chest which can be fatal. The...

    Cuckoo

While the farmers are the cause of much of the decline I do not believe they are to blame. We have had various policies over the years which have caused problems for farmers, anyone remember the butter mountains, wine lakes etc. Farmers need to make a living and many reports shown that while the...

    Cuckoo

I have not seen any swallows yet and I very rarely hear a cuckoo, once every few years. I do spend a reasonable amount of time outside. I lived nearby as a child in the 50's and cuckoos were heard most days. I regularly see herons, they come for our fast food takeaway but I dont think there are...

How many days in a fortnight?

Apparently for the purposes of Firemans pensions and possibly Local Authority pensions 52 1/3 was the correct figure but it was acquired knowledge as it did not appear to be written down anywhere that I had access to and no one bothered to tell me.

How many days in a fortnight?

One of my first proper jobs was in a Local Council. I was tasked with working out fireman's pensions. All calculations were manual as there was only one calculator in the office, a mechanical wind up one, and it was in great demand. After a week I had worked out all the ones I had been given and...

Small engine repair - any ideas? CONCLUSION

I have fitted a cheap clone carb to something, I can't remember what, and it runs fine. That was after fitting a replacement diaphragm kit which made no difference.

    Enlarging a hole in plasterboard

I have used the method described by Doug many times and it has always worked.

    Router advice please - Festool?

I have the OF 1010 EQB-Plus. It is 1/4" and 8mm I think. Probably too small for your needs but easy to use. despite or because of the handles? I also have a TRA001 the model before they brought out the adjustment from below. I bought it in a B&Q sale reduced from £254.00 to £98.98. The TRA took...

    Gravel Drive and leaves?

I have to replace a large gently sloping tarmacked parking area in front of the house. It has had two trenches dug through it for water and drains and was looking a bit tired anyway. Also the noise from the gravel from visitors should alert the dogs. Due to the cost of tarmc I am thinking of...

    Spray on roof insulation

I have been approached about getting a quote for spray on roof insulation. My wife answered the phone and passed the phone to me after telling him we may be interested! The first hurdle was they would not make an appointment if my wife was not present, as she is often out and probably would not...

    Be careful out there

A close friend who is a health and safety consultant, with all the qualifications, in construction and manufacturing fell off a small step ladder while cutting his hedge. Despite having a long pole hedge cutter he leaned over the hedge from inside to cut the outside. He landed on the grass and...

    Jet JWBS18 bandsaw tyres

I started the bandsaw for a small job and it made a banging/clattering noise with a very wobbly blade. Stopped it and had a look, the bottom tyre had partially broken off with most still intact on the wheel. I had tensioned it prior to use adjusted the guides and had spun the wheels manually to...

    Osmo, Google and Facebook Agghhhhh

I have just used Osmo oil on my floor, looks excellent, and wanted some further advice not covered by the FAQs. Osmo do not have a helpline/email enquiry facility but do have a user community. Thought I would try that. While creating an account so I can post it told me I would be sharing my...

    Flooring sander Hire

I have about 28sqM of oak strip 3 inch wide T&G (although T&G is a poor description of the tapered arrangement) flooring to sand level after relaying it. Has anyone experience of sander hire that can give me some tips about machines or hirers to go for/avoid, material usage and the time it...
