• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

It’s just an off-cut of Cherry. Now I have worked out how to do it I need to do a couple in oak for a project I have in mind.

If there was one hand tool which you would like to see made again.

I lament the demise of the Stanley Yankee Spiral Ratchet screwdriver.

Thanks - before I started carving I filled it with epoxy resin Andy.

    Party Wall

We were served notice on a rental property. The tenant sat on the letter and dropped it into the agent a month later. IIRC as we had not responded it was automatically deemed that a dispute had arisen so the problem sat with the neighbour who was in the process of invoking the dispute...

Well that’s another f&£king awful day!

So sorry to hear that Mark. They are part of the family and (as you know) it really hurts. Although it may sound hollow today the only consolation is that she obviously had a happy and long life, It’s the happy memories which eventually pervade.

    Ian Huntley

I cannot imagine how the parents will be feeling. It’s possible it will bring it all back (not that it will have ever left them) and perhaps they’d have preferred him to spend his life in prison never able to relax rather than the relatively quick end to his sentence. I just heard someone from...

I think that picture tells it's own story of three humans and a dog that had an enjoyable day!

@Paul_Munford - yes, being aware of the grain is key. I’ve not carved a doughnut but have done some Tudor roses which give a similar appreciation. I’m trying to push myself by thinking before I rotate the work whether I can manage to make a cut by switching from right (natural) handed to left...

    Sharp-eyed digger driver

I seem to recall from listening to Al Murray’s podcast on WW2 that 70,000 tonnes of bombs were dropped on the UK compared with 1,400,000 dropped on Germany.

I was interested to see how often this happens. It’s more than I expected … What do we know about unexploded WW2 bombs? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-56243750 It’s more common in York for human bones to be uncovered. It’s quite disruptive as work has to stop until the police...

Post a photo of the last thing you made...

A three legged oak stool. Only two legs on display! ... Octagonal tapered legs which I planed on a simple jig ... Slightly dished seat ... Probably should have made the tenons a bit thinner ... I could have oriented the legs a bit better as the oak had some lovely medullary rays...

    Oops

That is a shame as it does look like a very attractive piece of wood.

Thanks Bob. You did a post (possibly on the other place) some time ago of a bear that you had carved (for your granddaughter?) which was one of the things that piqued my interest in carving.

Yes - I’ve now got a copy of his book Joiners Work which is as interesting about how he prepares timber as it is about his carvings. I wonder if the trade off of using riven boards is what you gain in terms of stability is balanced by a reduced chance of interesting grain pattern.

    Destructive critter?

There’s an interactive map here Ian that shows where they have been released. It’s broader than I thought. https://rewildatheart.com/pages/british-beaver-comeback-interactive-map?srsltid=AfmBOoobZ_c9Av8KE9xJBCowtIglG4W70ABey-UGOZVVRpyK9-ypxw5B I read a few weeks ago that they are expected to...

How many carving tools do you need?

I like the way he holds the piece he’s working on with his big toe Andy. Here’s another guy I spotted doing some tuning in one of the souks

How many carving tools do you need?

I’m currently in Marrakech and spotted this guy working hard in his workshop. He is an artisan rather than a stall-holder in one of the souks and was actually quite shy. Using a mixture on O level French and sign language we had a good chat. I have c25 carving gouges and probably use 10...

Retirement , what is the end game.

This is a good illustration of the problem of knowing what to believe/where to get your news … https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4g8r23yv71o Unfortunately there is a trend for news articles to be created by AI for mainstream media. They pick the misinformation on social media up and repeat...

Not sure what your point is Phil but that’s hardly a statistically robust sample 😉
