• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    What stripper?

The Rustins website describes it as new formula so presumably it has changed. https://www.rustins.ltd/rustins/our-products/wood-preparation/strypit

    Any stone carvers here?

They do look impressive @GaryR. York Minster (the biggest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe) has a viewing area for watching their stone masons at work. It seems to be a job that attracts people with a sense of humour as there are two Star Trek characters (a Klingon and a Ferengi) amongst...

Post a photo of the last thing you made...

I posted some pictures of the carving for this previously … a shelf for my granddaughter’s nursery made to the exacting requirements of my daughter in law! It’s London Plane (as I used when making the cot) finished with Osmo. Here is the recipient supervising …

    Disappointing car, great neighbours

I wonder if forums had existed many years ago we’d have found people lamenting the lack of a starting handle when they’d had a problem with a starter motor … 😉

    What stripper?

Happy to be corrected but I think catalyst lacquer can only be removed by scraping or sanding.

    Axminster update

I received an email yesterday from Greenvill Crafts advising they are now an official stockist of UJK tools. They also had Axminster wares on display at the he Harrogate show. Perhaps selective partnering with other retailers is part of the plan.

    Unusual winter weather.

Most of the UK grinds to a halt at the first sign of snow. The last memorable winter weather event was probably February 2018 when we were hit by the Beast from the East. If I recall correctly it only lasted about 5 days though.

All the best for 2026 - any resolutions?

Happy New Year to everyone. Is anyone making any resolutions? Mine is to put my tools away as I go along rather than work amongst clutter. I also need to sort out my work life balance. I’m struggling with being semi-retired! All the best

    Axminster update

I think it’s far easier to point out the failings of a business strategy with the benefit of hindsight than predicting what will ( as opposed to could) go wrong in advance. Axminster undoubtedly called some things wrong but perhaps being both a manufacturer and retailer were hit hard by the...

    Hands Cavan Cabinetmakers

This came up in my YT feed. It’s worth watching if you enjoy suitably attired skilled craftsmen at work. I hope the apprentice is now running the company.

I had a push on using up my offcuts in the week before Christmas and made sixteen playing card boxes (two had already been snaffled when I took the picture. There is a combination of Cherry, ABW, English Walnut, Birds Eye Maple, Madrona, Bubinga, Kingwood, Myrtle, Elm, Masur Birch and Vavona.

That's a bit scary Adrian. Are you still able to drive etc?

    Falls (not water)

That looks painful - hopefully you have them all out now Phil. Thankfully no broken bones - I'm told that one of the most common fractures as we get older is the wrist which is caused by instinctively sticking an arm out to break a fall.
