• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Hanging a door. Some finer points

Apologies, didn't mean to cause any confusion with the image.

Hanging a door. Some finer points

That must be the first edition! Just read on in Hasluck and he mentions a penny. It seems that most books recommend 1/16 clearance at stiles and top rail and whatever will clear flooring. This seems to apply to internal doors. I was thinking of 1/8" for my door as it will face externally. I...

Hanging a door. Some finer points

I wonder if it in Hasluck where he mentions letting in the hinges, the potential issue being that the door can't fully open which sounds more like a close joint: confused again.

    Thanks, that makes sense now.

Hanging a door. Some finer points

I've hung a few doors in the past including double doors and as it's usually gone well I haven't given it much thought. However in thinking about getting ready to hang another door I thought I'd check Ellis' modern practical joinery and now I'm stuck trying to figure out a few details. Ellis...

    Escutcheon insert? Supplier

Thanks, I think I might try this just to see how it turns out

    Escutcheon insert? Supplier

Thanks for the company name Cheers for the offer Andy, maybe I'll look at the covered options first.

    Escutcheon insert? Supplier

I think the picture shows an escutcheon insert but I'm not sure if that's the correct term. Does anyone have a recommended supplier in the UK for such a thing? This is from a dressing table but I would like one suitably larger sized for a door key. The other side will have a surface rim lock. I...

    Secondary glazing

I was going to suggest stepping up through the bit sizes. Another technique is drilling through an acrylic mirror. An old CD can also work. I've never used the technique but have heard it being used in timber framing for drilling holes...

    What I have fixed today

Actually Sam, there's another paved over manhole on the other side of the house as well. Wonder did your previous homeowner live at my address at some point too?!

    What I have fixed today

Thanks Ian. I was holding my breath cutting those thin pavers at the edge. Obviously had no spares!

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

Made some pins/pegs for drawboring. Pretty quick job. I keep all small offcuts from a job in a box until the piece is finished for things like this or maybe to match a repair needed. I split small blanks to a rough size and draw the diameter on the end for something to aim at. Then a little...

    What I have fixed today

Had a blockage and no visible rodding access point. Drain guys found the manhole which had been paved over. Picked up a recessed manhole from local builders yard and mixed up a bit of muck. Bit of old osb stops any mortar falling in before it goes off. Hopefully won't have to open...

    Battery chain saws

I've used mostly 2 stroke chainsaws but have an electric stihl pruning pole saw. The advantages of electric are discussed above. The only things I'd add are to recommend buying the highest capacity battery you can afford as it will make the biggest difference in terms of run time. All depends...

    Reclaimed sapele

Couldn't agree more. I rescued 2 of these old glass slide cabinets that were being loaded onto metal cages to be skipped! The other one holds a selection of tools and miscellany. This nicer one is in the house. It even has lovely plans of the piece on the underside of some of the drawers.

Is that a living willow chair beside the bench?

    Extra length on window components

Here's a horn on a window I made. In this case the horn allows the rail to have a full width tenon. The extra meat of the horn, as it were, prevents blow out when the window is slammed. I've seen this additional material called relish in timber framing. You could decorate the horn as you choose...

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

Slow progress but another bit done. Waiting on the glass company actually just responding for a quote but had hoped to have the glass to hand at this stage. Got holes drilled so I can now mark the offset on the tenons for drawboring. Prefer this to wedging but both work. One or preferably 2...

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

Just recalling @GaryR delivery from Japan with the nice handwritten note. I do enjoy an unexpected surprise with an order especially if I can eat it. And Woodowl bits are fantastic.

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

All of the chamfers are roughed out with a mallet and chisel, firstly bevel down then flat until about 1/8" or 1/16" from final depth. Then it depends: the longest sections get a no4 skewed to take the worst of the high spots off. Then they're finished with a spokeshave down to the pencil line...
