• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Another tool chest

They're stunning as is. I'd vote to leave them as they are.

I had forgotten just how good this workholding masterclass is.

Holdfasts are great. I have the Gramercy ones and had to get them from dieter fine tools https://www.fine-tools.com/. They usually have whatever I'm looking for that the UK sellers mightn't have and shipping to UK doesn't seem to be an issue.

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

Just a quick post but starting on the chamfers. These particular ones will frame the faceted side of the door so pyramids (test piece in the background out of focus) seemed appropriate here. It was tempting to stop at the flat diagonal stop. On the way, it nearly seemed that some sort of...

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

A little fettling to snug things up but that's the major joinery done! Only 4 months behind schedule:rolleyes:. Sending tracings off to the glazier now for the awkward shapes and in the meantime will do some chamfering and cleanup

    Brass? Lacquer? Horrible letterbox

A very strong magnet only lightly attaches to it so I'm guessing it's solid? I don't think it was very expensive so I'll give it a go along the edge as you suggest. Thanks

    Brass? Lacquer? Horrible letterbox

I could remove the letterbox and try sanding it. What grit(s) would you recommend?

    Brass? Lacquer? Horrible letterbox

I recently spent quite a bit of time restoring a front door and as part of this removed and cleaned the brass. I assume the door and most of the brass are the same age as the house, so approaching 100 years. The pieces are nice EXCEPT for the letterbox which is a recent cheap gharish addition...

    Musée des Arts Décoratifs

Reading @Windows post about art Nouveau brass escutcheons reminded me of a trip to Musée des Arts Décoratifs, probably my favourite museum in Paris. It's adjacent to the Louvre. There's a section on furniture from different periods and countries and it's hugely inspiring. I had a look through...

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

Working on the glazing bars for this. Intention is to look like this. While working from a rod is the usual way for all measurements, I think rods were more important when multiple identical items were required. Workshops could store the rods from jobs and remake if needed without going out to...

Moving an outside mains stopcock. Or not.

Yes, i think the old black pipe is Alkathene. Maybe not quite following your plan but I had to replace an old garden tap recently and found out the black pipe wasn't quite same external diameter as my blue pushfit MDPE pipe fittings. Ended up bodging a fit by tapering the outside of the black...

    Yes another bathroom reno.

We have 2 bathrooms in need of renovation so this is certainly something I'm interested in

Well, that day didn't go to plan.

Good luck with your recovery. Happened a friend of mine a couple of years ago and he was in an air boot for a while, avoiding surgery. Know accidents are all a bit different but he seems totally fine now

American here in Oundle (Peterborough) - Brand new to woodworking

I think the bandsaw is very versatile. While it mightn't match a dedicated tool for specific cuts is does a great job of several different types and is excellent in getting stuff reasonably accurately dimensioned. Great for thicknessing so that planing can be minimised. I'd recommended putting...

American here in Oundle (Peterborough) - Brand new to woodworking

Hi Russ, you sound like someone that does a lot of research which will stand you in good stead. One of the main things I've learned in building things is that plans can change as you go along and things occur that require new approaches but that's part of the fun in woodworking. I use mostly...

    Dust extraction.

That's lots of work but will pay off in the long run. I keep putting off sorting out my workspace but attention such as this ultimately allows you to work more efficiently and safely. Have you thought about a switch like this to turn on extraction automatically. For me it would be more about...

A *Heads Up* again at Lidls 16-04-2026

Thanks for the heads up. Following your link, it says the set is £7.99. That's definitely worth a punt. A pint almost costs as much these days.

Post a photo of the last thing you made...

Sorry for the daft question but how did you make such perfectly round pieces with no lathe in sight? I see some sort of drill bit in the pictures but not sure what the machine is.

    Outside door frame - finished

That's a great job. Looks fantastic

    Outside door frame - finished

Coming together really nicely. The door is aging beautifully. I'm interested in that herringbone brick foundation: sounds like a real find. Was it a previous path or floor to an old building? Could it be incorporated somehow?

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

Ah yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think the floor is stunning but take you point regarding its strictly anachronistic quality. Some of the choices in this build are dictated by what is available to me and also just the challenge in going something new to me. While I had intended...
