• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

Multiple things to deal with in last couple of months so a bit behind in this project. Here are some pics of a different sort of panel. It's at about the limits of panel size that I feel is doable before instability becomes a big risk. A bit of geometry and a couple of equations allowed working...

    Outside door frame - finished

I would recommend stainless fixings for this although your oak is probably well seasoned I'd still worry about some reaction with steel for the part going through oak. I would second using more fixings than you think necessary. Although stainless is definitely more brittle, I've never sheared a...

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

I had a couple of solid doors that were given to me a few years back for repurposing. The wood is very easy to work and groove but not sure what it is. Anyway, I thought it would provide a nice contrast edging to the main oak floor. The pieces across the width of the room needed joining to...

Post a photo of the last thing you made...

I'm really struck by this piece. The facets are beautifully executed.

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

Thanks, it was largely made up as I went along. When I first placed the staves on the plywood cut out, I wasn't sure how to lift the whole contraption while keeping everything lined up and in place. I ended up mitrebonding a few around the edges and turning the while thing upside down and...

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

I don't think at a comparable volume woodfibre has the same effectiveness of insulation but apparently its vapour open and can be disposed of in a similar way to timber at least according to the company blurb. Vapour permeability was a big plus for me. I'm fairly confident all is dry and airy...

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

I might see if I've something with grain that would fit the curve or as close as. Just had a leaf through Ellis and he has a chapter on curved work. Might be useful for your project Nick. I do need to read sections a few times as it's very text heavy but there's great info in there and some...

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

A little trap door was added with push in insulation A few offcuts of oak provided a slim frame for the aperture. This is made a little larger than the plywood cutout. The same staves were numbered and cut to fit across the frame as if it wasn't there. The edge of the staves of the trapdoor...

I'm not sure i understand the readings. Shouldn't you have systolic and diastolic per reading

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

It's a great book and having a hard copy is highly recommended. You're probably aware that it's available for free as a PDF as it is out of print? Maybe you're planning a WIP for your windows?

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

That building is beautiful, really impressive brickwork. Great to see these old treasures used and maintained (if done properly!). Curved doors are a whole other level of difficulty but amazing. The glazing bar at the pen tip in the photo is what I'm thinking about for the door. This is from...

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

The suspended floor was supposed to rest on drop in joists set in notches cut out of the sills but I just didn't factor this in in time so I used joist hangers. Joists were to be like the tying joist in the centre. This one is pegged in place. There's not much wood under the notch but the sill...

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

I'm also slightly scared about hurting myself with power tools. With the best will in the world accidents happen and I'd rather face the business end of a handtool versus a powertool. My one concession is my bandsaw as I got sick of ripping huge pieces with a saw. However, in the past, in a...

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

The top rail has a gentle enough arc so I scored the rebate with a guage fitted with a blade (sharpened drill bit) and cut the waste with a router. A powered router would cut in a flash but this was nice quiet gentle work: took about 40 minutes. First couple of pics were a test piece. Middle...

Wall cupboards in a cold garage

Some good suggestions above. I work in an old drafty single skin unheated garage. The main thing I've found is if tools aren't wiped and oiled then they'll corrode especially when working on particular woods. When put in a drawer with lack of air flow, this is probably worsened. Humidity can be...

    French holiday house

If 3 phase that opens up the possibility of some serious wood working toys and a ridiculously fast charger if you go down the electric car route

Beautiful house and beautiful room. Does it come with the furniture?

Curved or arched rebate with hand tools

Interesting video: I hadn't thought of turning the router blade 90degrees inwards. Seems I might be able to do most of the cut with the router and maybe tidy up with incannel gouge or curved sandpaper block

Curved or arched rebate with hand tools

This is great. Arc is gentle enough. Router plane and gouge might be the answer for the rebate from the tools I have

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

Quick post. A little bit of detailing for fascia and guttering and a threshold step from a piece of slate found in the garden! (presume old fireplace hearth taken out during previous renovation and lucky find for me). Fascia boards are from left over douglas fir sarking with linseed oil paint...
