• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

Managed to clean up one stile down to the knife marks. Below is how I achieved this. This certainly isn't the way to do things if you're running a business but if you're only making one of these and have limited tools, it's an option. Just noticed but a nice tidy workbench and area would've...

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

The oak certainly moves and twists and checks but I suppose that's called character. As you know, it's lovely to work in its green state although it demolishing steel if you forget to wipe/oil. I don't remember hearing the term "storey post" before though they have quite a few names. Maybe also...

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

The joints would probably stay together as is but the pins/treenails/pegs draw everything up tight and keep things as tight as possible through the tremendous amount of shrinkage that occurs. I started making these pins with whatever free snippets of time I had toward the end of the main frame...

Although I did rip the stiles with a bandsaw

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

This door is all done by hand with the tools in the picture above. For the larger through mortices like this I just make a guide to suit the position. This guide is onto its fifth door now. Each mortice does take longer than I think.

    Another tool chest

I love this type of joinery. So effective and clever a solution.

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

Well maybe I'll do this in a few stages to keep it manageable. This first photo is March 2022 so this project is now close to 4 years though it feels at times more like 10. The foundations are very shallow, just a bit of home mixed concrete under the 6 main posts as this is where all the...

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

I've started a WIP for this door but I can't get much done with the low temps and freezing fingers at the moment. This door WIP is part of a cabin bigger WIP: I could post some pics showing some of the main stages in the cabin build so far that has got me to this point...

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

Yes, mostly to increase the amount of light. Some also think it looks better and more balanced especially when there are fixed lights/panes either side which would have more slender frames than a door. I like the appearance and have an old similar door in our house which I always liked the look...

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

In the process of making a diminshed stile door and learning along the way so this one unlikely to be a quick build. Is being made from oak and will be approx 920 x 2040 mm so will be a beast to lift and not looking forward to moving it into place whenever that will be. So amongst other things...

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

Thanks for all the suggestions for cutting this joint. I tried a kind of double cut like this or intial cut to get close and then to mark off and finish the cut though I was using fairly rough cut joist offcuts but was useful as practise. Your final joint assembled and glued is pretty flawless...

I like that wedged setup to hold the door on its side for planing. Will be doing that at some point. Have to admit that a chisel plane is a new one to me. Certainly looks perfect for this sort of thing

Yes, that's the one. I just noticed that this was made in a few days. Might be more of a delay at the rate I work Thank you, I've seen some of this guys videos but not this one which looks spot on I think I might make one of these even though I only intend making one diminished stile door...

Finally getting around to saying hello

Hello all, what a great resource this is. I'm an enthusiastic hobbyist sometimes biting off more than I can chew but (usually) enjoy the process as much as the finished article. Found this site when searching around for tips on making a diminished stile door. This particular issue is part of a...

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

Hello. I'm making a diminished stile door in well seasoned oak. This is being made almost entirely with handtools. The only machine I use is a bandsaw for ripping large stock. So the issue is, does anyone have practical experience and advice (and hopefully photos) for: 1. marking out the...
