• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    hacked debit card

2 years ago a good friend of mine had approximately 30k taken from his business account. The bank are not reimbursing the account, lawyers are involved it’s super messy, he will probably never see this money again. I was luckier when my card was hacked for a small amount and account was...

    Ideas for replacing hinges.

Fair point Mike….guess it depends how many times the doors have been on and off in there 20 years. Here in southern Spain most hinges are lift off so the screws very seldom fail. When I was back in uk doing restoration stuff most old homes would have a couple of doors there the top hinge would...

    Ideas for replacing hinges.

If it’s just the screws that are failing then super glue and matchsticks in the old screw holes then re drill and re screw. If matchsticks are not big enough then use kabab sticks or make your own.

    Dust extraction.

Nice upgrade to the workshop, and excellent idea on the pull switch. My pull is up high so it misses my head and every time I use it I’m making a movement my body wouldn’t normally make, I’m convinced it’s help me cut down on back problems.

    Dogs’ understanding of time

I’m not sure animals can tell time like us humans but have a different way of telling when things will happen. My old nabour had a fill in job 15 minutes from home and her days and times were completely random. Her cat would always sit on the wall when she left work and wait there for her to...

    Dividers for book shelves

Back in the 90s we used to buy custom book splines to decorate false panels within a bookcase, don’t know if they exist now.

    Dividers for book shelves

Most of the library’s I’ve been commissioned has had adjustable shelves, If it’s a painted finish is soo much easier to finish and lighter to move about. I always try to put a 10mm back on, naturally this is fitted after spraying/finishing.

    A question for the electricians

What size are these panels that Aldi are offering ? They would need to be quite big to be worthwhile, especially with the uk cloud cover…….Or is it just another Green narrative to make money from uninformed punters

    Outside door frame - finished

Nick my go to fixing would be concrete screws, https://ebay.us/m/XD9eL6 They are 7 or 8 mm thick so super sturdy and a small head. I would pack between the frame and brickwork with plastic to avoid seasonal movement. Fix into brickwork as Mike suggest using resin or my go to are Fisher fixings.

How The Spindle Moulder Gained Its Notoriety

A lot of my cutters are brazed heads, like big router cutters, so little chance of one going awol but I still stand to the side when starting up. Still get scared when starting up a 100mm high cornice cutter, remember the first time I got on the floor when I heard the noise .

    Chisels

If I was in the uk I would look for old second hand. Old steel is generally better than the new stuff.

    Removing cat flap

I’ve probably done 1000s the way Andy describes, I used a fine scribing blade in the jig saw for the scribing cut, straight cut was cut on the mitre saw. I also had a few shaped rasps to fine tune the moulding scribe. Most importantly when doing skirting….remember to look after your knees!
