• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Clamp of Theseus

Nice job! I really love Klemmsia clamps. At first I was wondering if beech would be a good choice for this (brittle and not very flexible). But then I remembered the original are made from beech as well. Silly me...

    Single bevel blades

If I have to do a lot of edge band trimming I switch to my MFK 700. It is perfect for such jobs. But most of the time I am too lazy and just use the plane I linked to.

    Breakfast

Here we only have Buzzards. But I am glad to have them, because they catch mice and we have loads and loads of those at the moment. There is a veritable plaque of them. I think there must be about 5 holes in the ground for every square meter.

    Single bevel blades

Why not use a blade iron mounted on / screwed to a piece of wood? That's what I do when I don't have my preferred tool at hand. This is my favourite tool for this type of job: https://www.leevalley.com/en-gb/shop/tools/hand-tools/planes/70929-veritas-cabinetmakers-trimming-plane But I got...

Well that’s another f&£king awful day!

What sad news. It is sooo hard to miss your dear friends after many years of loyal friendship. Let alone two in such a short time. We have had many dogs by now (we often adopt older rescues), but you never get used to that feeling. It sounds like she had a full and enjoyable life that you have...

Does anyone know where to get this bits' companion ?

I can't figure out how large it is from the photo, but my first impression was that this is a mirror clamp. If that is true, then it is missing a sliding part with a spring on it. I might be way off here though.

    Sharp-eyed digger driver

That must have been a real scare. Imagine stuff like that laying in the ground next to your house all the time you were living there...

    Conversion - bathroom to en-suite

I always prefer to use waterproof glued underlayment as the lowest layer of a floor. When I was building my last house I had to do so in very wet weather. Sadly it stayed liked that for more than a month. It just wouldn't stop raining. The roof was not there yet, causing the floor of the second...

    Destructive critter?

Steve, I am quit a bit north of your location, but our fig in The Netherlands grows like you wouldn't believe. So, I suspect yours should be able to do OK where you are. I have to cut it back every autumn (immediately after it has shed its leaves). If I don't, it will start to grow against the...

    Destructive critter?

My first thought was rabbit too. When food is scarce for a longer period of time, as is has been the last month with all the snow, they will start eating bark. Most often they will only ring it. But if the wood is tasty enough, or they are hungry enough they will eat wet green wood as well.

Things have moved on in the last 8 years and KISS

Good induction hobs do have an indication they are still hot. Mine, for example, shows a red "H" when it is hot.

Things have moved on in the last 8 years and KISS

Steve, this is the newer version of my range cooker. It does have physical knobs. However, at 110 cm, it is wider than regular hobs. Therefore, it might not fit in the space you have for it. It is a great hob though. We especially use the slow cooking oven very often. Falcon Excel 110:

Things have moved on in the last 8 years and KISS

Well, as an IT specialist of almost 4 decades it might surprise some that I do agree with the sentiment. I hate, repeat HATE, IoT devices. Recently I had to return a new TV because, after a month, it refused to do what it was bought for. The reason: it thought it hadn't been updated for too...

    Suggestions for excavating this hole

I would be tempted to grab my band file. I don't know the dimensions of that hole though.... A bit of sandpaper glued to a countersunk washer that is screwed to a rod in a drill might work too. Would need a very coarse grit, I suspect.

Mike builds a teardrop (tongue box and conduit)

Yeah, that was exactly my thinking as well at first. It took a full minute for that coin to fall... I am really admiring the workmanship on display here!

Oh man, that's sounds fantastic! I must admit I am a bit jealous of you right now. Enjoy your flight/adventure! 👌🛩️

Klein has some very nice multimeters. Not quite as good as Fluke, but close and much cheaper.

All the best to everyone for 2026 (and after). This year will finally be the year I finish my new workshop. For sure... Really...

    Falls (not water)

Yeah. Osteoporosis is nasty. Lots of walking helps limit its impact on your bones. The small "bumps" from landing on your feet have a positive effect on the density of your bones. And, of course, walking is good for you in other ways as well. It is one of the reasons we have never minded going...

    Falls (not water)

Ouch, those thorns look painful. Hope you'll get rid of them all soon without too much festering. I had some buckthorns needles in my hand once, but at least those are easily removed without leaving parts of them in your skin. Cactus needles are much nastier. I suspect I might be a few years...
