• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Workshop on a slope

Welcome to the forum. Things are a little different here in that pickup trucks are popular. To that end I would make the the floor start on the high side and not dig into the slope. That would let me have a small deck on the downhill end where a truck/van can be backed up to. Great thing to...

    Deer Crossing

Headlights confuse deer and they panic. They may stop, bolt ahead or double back. I think they see them as stars and realise too late that they aren't and are in danger. If I have time I try to turn off the headlights and tap the horn. They won't panic as much. A few years ago on a one mile...

    Christmas has come early!

Nice gift. Closest I get to bog oak is to blacken some with iron acetate (steel wool dissolved in vinegar). :) Pete

    Deer Crossing

When the short days of winter are just over eight hours long the night driving can't always be eliminated. I never argue with a moose. They want the right of way, they can have it. Fortunately around here there are no moose. Further north for sure. Pete

    Deer Crossing

Bigger pucker factor when you see them run up onto the highway at night when you are doing 100km/h and some decide to go back from whence they came. I much prefer to see them way off the road. ;) Pete

    Not feeling all there today.

What's the big deal? Just a picture of Pete mid-transport back to his starship. Pete

A quick bit of improvisation. Ground Coffee!

Penmakers have been using coffee grounds and CA glue to fill cracks and holes for a long time. Pack the defect with coffee and dribble some thin CA onto the grounds. Keep adding more until filled. I've used other spices, mustard, chilli, paprika, etc, when I want a better colour match. For the...

Playing about with wooden threads again

You are welcome. I didn't show the smaller clamps he made using a lag bolt as a thread tap and a carving "V" gouge in a home made thread box. Not sure where they ended up. Goes to show that there are many ways to skin a cat. Some of them don't result in scratches either. Pete I'll add...

Playing about with wooden threads again

I haven't only because I haven't needed any but I would use the method without hesitation. My father was trying to cut threads with a traditional 1 1/2" thread box and tap. Got too much tear out so I suggested getting a Beall router jig. He didn't like that idea because the tip of a pointed...

Playing about with wooden threads again

My father took a different approach and cut them with a table saw. A powered thread box. Pete

I wondered what was up. Thought it might have been on my end for a while. Glad it's back. Pete

    Suggestions for excavating this hole

With some of the comments about the sides being thin and talk of different jigs of various kinds I took the thread to be leaning towards redoing the mortice. Sorry if I misread things. I will also admit to never having seen a lockset like yours. Ours are all pretty much round that you drill a...

    Suggestions for excavating this hole

Buy or make a router jig and practice with it on some scrap until you are comfortable using it. Fill the existing hole with a wood plug and a good epoxy to fill the gaps. Recut the hole. Pete

    Well this is a bummer.

I gave up playing those game forever ago. Now I just set the cruise control, weather permitting, for the speed limit. If the person behind me doesn't like it they can pass when they think it is safe. When they do I anticipate them cutting in front of me. Not my job to police their driving. I...

    Well this is a bummer.

Winter driving. You can expect it but never plan for it. If it is bad enough it'll be on the news tonight. ;) Hope you get going soon and get some work in tonight. Got enough gas in the tank to sit out the wait? Pete

Hi from a currently cold place. The Canadian Prairies.

Might have been further north of us. -40C around here for a while every winter which you do notice if you are outside for a while, like plowing the snow drifts from the driveway for a few hours. It is -10C and sunny today, which is quite nice. You dress for it and act accordingly and it normal...

    oak screw top pot

There are a number of jigs that turn the box against a rotating cutter. Not necessarily cheap but when you have to have it. An example of some YouSnoob videos of one system. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLG3S-gdoXeXU9SicvWwPItokl3Onk-83g Your other option is what are called thread...
