• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

NOt sure which router, appreciate any advice

Looks a nice little jig Steve. The first place I worked used a Wolf Drill in a stand with a mortice attachment which seemed ok. The second place I worked had a combination machine with a slot morticer which was very quick and gave very clean cuts (rounded corners though). The below jig works...

    Accoya, but it the finish?

Just food for thought when I did a search for Accoya I noticed different grades. This link explains the diffrence between them: https://www.accoya.com/app/uploads/2020/07/Lumber-Grading_EN_NEW.pdf Would be worth checking to see you are getting the quality/grade you need for your windows.

    Accoya, but it the finish?

You have a reasonble supplier Trevanion at £2000 cu/m. I have just made an online search for Accoya and Myers are charging twice that: Another supplier was charging about eight times what you are paying £176! I have never been able to find Accoya at a price that would make it's use viable...

    F ing cold this morning!

I would say it depends upon where you live in the UK and a lot depends upon if East, West, North or south. I live on the East Coast in the UK (Lowestoft, the most easterly point in the UK). January and February are the coldest months of winter when you can often feel the cold biting, summer for...

    F ing cold this morning!

I was working in Germany (Hamburg) a few years back and it was -7 degC back home was -1 DegC so I thought it would be nice to be back home until I arrived in Suffolk England, still 1- DegC but because of the North sea wind chill factor and of course we have the dampness of sea air to creep into...

    Sunday 02/02/25 in Lidl

I was given a Parkside plunge saw (track saw) by a friend on site who did not know how to use it, I can't find any fault with it except the blade is not the best. Apart from the blade all the controls work as I would expect and there is no play in the bearings.

    Glue up when cold

6 months shelf life for their D4 wood glue, is what is says on the Everbuild D4 data sheet. It is a short shelf life but it is a glue for a specific task, D3 is better for general use. The Everbuild 502 D3 has a stated shelf life of 12 months. This link takes you to the UREKA web page that...

    Glue up when cold

I have used Everbuild 502 which is suitable for structural use and light water contact, you can buy 5Lt for around £20 inc delivery or 1Lt for about £5 and I have found it to be excellent. The shelf life is supposed to be 12 months but I have kept it sealed (not in a squeeze bottle) and used it...

    Diamond plates

I can see that you have a method that you like and that's not going to be compromised. As most of my work is on site I tend to just sharpen my tools on the fly wherever I am working at the time and I tend to carry that haphazard aproach into my workshop, maybe it's time for me to be more...

    Diamond plates

Mike just sink the plates into a holder so they can not move when you are using them, allow a finger pull to lift and then flip when needed. The below gives an example of a shop product but you could just hold the plates in some thin plywood cut-outs.

1/2 router something like Festool 1400, Dewalt 625, Trend T11

A lot of people are moving over to battery power on sites. I was not thinking of selling the 110v routers as they are not worth a lot second hand just giving my thoughts on the Hitachi MV12 as a have so many LoL.

    Sticking wood glazing bars

I have been mulling over a lot of online information regarding bedding in sealed units also fitting glazing bars on sliding sash windows. The 3M VHB tape you suggest seems a good one. I have done a quick check online and there are lots of variations of 3M VHB's tape so just wondered which one...

1/2 router something like Festool 1400, Dewalt 625, Trend T11

I have 4 Hitachi M12V 1/2" routers but only one is 240v which I am keeping the other three are 110v. The variable speed unit can fail and has on two of mine but you can bypass it and still use them on full power which I have done (makes very little difference most of the time). I noticed the...

    Sticking wood glazing bars

I have taken a look at some old literature I have saved on windows and the below standard came to light: You have to pay to view the standard! https://knowledge.bsigroup.com/products/workmanship-on-building-sites-code-of-practice-for-glazing?version=standard Below is an extract from a window...

    Diamond plates

I still use a two sided india oil stone when at work and in my workshop. My current one has been knocking around for about 30 years or more and i don't seem to get the problem with grit becoming dull so I guess that's one advantage of the old oil stones over the more modern diamond ones. I do...

    Planer Thicknesser Knives advice please

I used to take my planer blades to a saw service in Horsford (Norwich UK) but they came back concave and burnt the saw blades I had sharpened there also came back untrue so I decided to have a go at sharpening my own planer blades. I just put an angled piece of wood on my bench grinder and...

    Spindle cutters query

Yes although they look like ovolo and could produce an ovolo they could also be used as scribes in the bottom multico tenon block. As you say the quirk (flat) looks rather larger than normal. I'm now thinking they may have been made for a one off job which I will never get to find out about. I...
