• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Removing cat flap

In the HALL. My Grand Mother would have a fit. You can hang it on a hook in the under stair cupboard but never leave it in public view.

    Single bevel blades

If you are just edging straight manageable panels the router table with a false fence lifted a few mm above the table works very well with either a straight cutter dialled in and not higher than needed or a bearing guided cutter for additional security. The downside is you have to edge in sequence.

If there was one hand tool which you would like to see made again.

Let me reach for my rose tinted glasses. I would like a quality egg beater, but... In my experience the ones made in the good old days were not always robust. I inherited my grandad's egg beater which I used occasionally. One day I came to use it and disaster struck the chuck fell apart and...

Well done. I think it warrants at least a bottle

A question on insulating the ceiling of the Wonky Donkey

Ian, am I right that you do not intend to put any plasterboard or other fire rated product over your layer of insulation on the ceiling? If so check very carefully both the fire spread properties of the insulation and what poisons are in any smoke generated. I would not take the manufacturer's...

    Party Wall

If the firm you are appointing are members of the RICS they must comply with this https://www.rics.org/profession-standards/rics-standards-and-guidance/sector-standards/building-surveying-standards/party-wall-legislation-and-procedure If not find someone else.

So..is anyone feeling, justifiably, just that little bit smug ….

By luck rather than judgment. For some reason we used less oil last year and did not need to fill up until December. We should be good until next autumn as long as I install the machine gun turrets and perimeter security system.

    Party Wall

I doubt that would be a problem and I can see the advantages, I was more concerned of finding someone who did not have a conflict of interest with the developer. The RICS require mandatory checks on conflict of interest and his T&C's should confirm he has no conflict of interest with either the...

    Chairs - Done!

Excellent Nick. The tutorial is useful I may see if we feel up to doing it ourselves or still go to an upholsterer. However I need to finish the chairs first!

Mike builds a teardrop (tongue box and conduit)

If I had known you were thinking of an Audi I would have put you right. The problems I have had ver the last 15 months are diabolical. The customer service works on the basis that you work for them and you do as they tell you. Getting a broken down car repaired takes months. Even getting the...

    Workshop on a slope

In theory, Yes. In reality building below ground is expensive and not always successful even when specialists are involved.

    Scam alert

Andy, I had the same message save it was for a carving screw. So at least 3 of us it looks suspicious.

Well done Nick. Excellent job. Looking forward to seeing your upholstery plan.

    Now for the Chairs

I will be working abroad next week so zero chance of any progress until I get back to the UK. Sooo with a desire to have the illusion of progress rather than spending a day sanding the back of the next chair, I decided to put it together so I could claim 4 glued up by 1 February 2026! I will...

    Now for the Chairs

There has also been a variation order issued. A few weeks ago whilst I was looking at some of my design inspiration over my shoulder I heard “I think the chairs with the shells on the front rail look better than those without. Can they be added or is it too late”. Without thinking I said “Yes...

    Now for the Chairs

No3 glued up today. Half way! This one has had a mind of its own for square. The final fit was painful 10mm out of square. I eventually found the offending shoulder and corrected it. The dry run was perfect without clamps. So had a cuppa whilst the glue warmed. Put it together, 10mm out of...
