• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Oak dining table build (complete, and inside)

9’ as one solid table! That will be a three shreddies morning. Well do not let us keep you only 32 days to go. As long as you are not doing the chairs as well for this Christmas.

    Now for the Chairs

It has been a while since I posted on this and it will be a bit longer before I do. The reason being the day job and installing a new heating system in my office. The day job tends to get busy from September to Christmas and this year was no exception. I have been abroad a lot so no...

    Saw blades

The HSE say to set the saw blade so that the tooth protrudes all the way to the bottom of the gullet https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/wis16.pdf I have a good crown guard and so set it higher for two reasons: First it pushes downward and second it is the shortest cut and shortest length that teeth...

    Chairs - Done!

That is a long story but in a nutshell I have not been near my chairs since early September. I might get back this week if I am lucky.

    Chairs - Done!

Well done it is a serious milestone to achieve.

    Distressing oak furniture

Gently taking the arrises off some edges with a rasp or sander to create a well worn feel is one thing. Or sanding through the stain to create an aged patina might be OK. Doing physical damage to something you spent hundreds of hours making is too much to contemplate.

    Distressing oak furniture

If Wallace’s technique fails then either fuming at it (with ammonia) or Liberon do waxes to produce various effects or at least they used to.

    Mystery chisel

One of the best carving gouges I own is made from an old file. It keeps its edge far longer than any commercial gouge. But that does not look like any chisel as it has a curved taper. As such it would not be easy to use as a chisel. I like the gasket scraper explanation. So now an industrial...

    Saw blades cabinet? Completed

My original plan was as per Dukes but I did not want them hitting each other so I got some 3mm plywood and fitted that in the kerfs and made a matching top as per the bottom to keep it all square. OTT Yes. But no risk of damage to some very expensive blades.

    No big surprise

It is a sad reflection on our construction professions that so few know how to retro fit insulation in a dwelling so that this did not happen. It is not rocket science.

    Mad capped plan?

I installed such a system in part of my house. It is great. But... You still need to gut the ground floor as you will add circa 75mm to the floor level in order to install this. Think about what that does to door heights. In theory it could be done room by room but I would not. The existing...

Modifying roof trusses to increase height for a two-post lift

Roof trusses are not pretty accidents. They are very careful highly engineered structures. You need a structural engineer who understands the design of roof trusses and timber buildings. Yes it will cost but the alternative is a serious risk of collapse.

Alternative to wood for eg plough plane fences?

Poplar is not a wood I would reach for when making a fence for any plane. Beech, temperate hardwoods, Walnut and Oak would be my choices.

    Openreach full fibre

Yes it can be run on telegraph poles. Though I doubt you get the choice. If there are underground ducts in the area it will be underground. If like me it is all telegraph poles then it will be overground.

Link to BGHM German machinery safety guide PDF

Thanks Tom, as the owner of a slider for 20 years I still saw something new to me that I had not thought of or seen in the forums.

Mike builds a teardrop (tongue box and conduit)

Mike, that is all rather frustrating. Will you continue or moth ball it until the spring?

    Troubleshooting frame assembly

Being the cowboy I am I might not do anything. If the frame is going to be fixed in place then some twist can be taken out when fixing it in place. If gentle to moderate pressure can persuade it to lie flat then I would ask myself if it is worth the effort to correct it and simply use the...

How long to cut a rebate (unpowered)?

Hi Windows, that sounds like you need your chisels to be sharper. Knots in pine can be hardwork but a very sharp chisel will win. Also with pairing in pine it should be easy with a sharp chisel.

How long to cut a rebate (unpowered)?

The problem was being left handed. As for the blade at the front, it is useful when making half glazed doors where the rebate either reverses side or there is no rebate at the bottom. it allows you to get closer to the point where you slope the rebate out or to make stopped rebates.

    Mike's ext'n & renovation (solar panels)

Mike very neat. Did you consider solar water panels such as are common in Europe to heat the water and top up with pv as needed?
