• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Hammer C3 31 from rotary converter issue

It was perfectly clear Sam that resetting the interlock switch had likely got your motor running. There was talk in parallel about the possibility of brake board and potentially related failures - which begged the question of how the rotary converter was connected even if it wasn't the cause of...

Hammer C3 31 from rotary converter issue

I'm not sure where you are coming from with that response Roger. I posted the above not to try to diagnose the 'won't go' problem from a distance but because it's widely accepted as the reality when using rotary converters - because while it might not stop the machine from running powering...

A new take on the PAUL SELLERS HAND CUT MORTISE JIG.

Nice work Mike. David Charlesworth did a lot to both communicate and normalise the precision that has always been necessary in fine woodworking. A follow on from the usefulness of learning from an experienced person using effective methods - and of following this with lots of practice. One of...

Hammer C3 31 from rotary converter issue

I've run a three phase Agazzani 24in bandsaw on a Transwave rotary converter (the variety that uses a motor to generate the third phase - not a static converter) for about 14 years.. One to watch out for on conventional hard wired machine electrics with rotary converters may be that unless...

A new take on the PAUL SELLERS HAND CUT MORTISE JIG.

It works fine (as in continues the plane of the guide block down into the mortise - joint pics added in later edit) if the latter is good and deep Tom and the chisel as above - but only when final paring as in taking off only very thin shavings.. A lot of care is needed to hold the back of the...

A new take on the PAUL SELLERS HAND CUT MORTISE JIG.

He's not the easiest of personalities/has his vagaries but as most has lots useful to say and attracts interest . Look at the length of this thread... :) It depends on the nature of the work but there's potentially quite a bit more going regarding fits and dimensions (the total task) in the...

Helical vs. Spiral Cutterhead for my MiniMax FS35 JOINTER-PLANER? BRAND?

Even the original Felder M42 knives BT while sharp are probably not as finely ground as is ideal. Interesting that you gave up on commercial grinding and started doing your own sharpening. Great to have a surface grinder! My subjective feeling is that knives finished to a very fine grit as well...

Helical vs. Spiral Cutterhead for my MiniMax FS35 JOINTER-PLANER? BRAND?

Having just noticed your signature T it reminds of a fundamental aspect of most woodworking machinery and especially PTs - it rings very true. There's probably quite a bit of variation in how different individuals experience the same hardware. The likelihood is that there's not so many users...

Helical vs. Spiral Cutterhead for my MiniMax FS35 JOINTER-PLANER? BRAND?

I've seen the videos Mike and know that Derek uses an insert head. I haven't heard his thinking explained in detail. Most of what I have done is with local hardwoods where with sharp knives tear out typically has not been a problem. Interesting to hear that insert heads reduce tear out in...

    More P/T woes

A quick PS Steve as my time is tight. The first part is only a precaution because you said that the tables were out of alignment again. A 7ft board that is not straight (as you say) and/or is heavy enough to be hard to reliably hold down tight on the tables is likely to be problematical. A...

Helical vs. Spiral Cutterhead for my MiniMax FS35 JOINTER-PLANER? BRAND?

Trying to draw together what has been said and to add a little. The difficulty with this sort of discussion is that few of us have experience across all of the available alternatives, also that requirements, abilities expectations and machines can vary widely. :) We tend to end up stuck with...

    More P/T woes

Hi Steve. I don't as before know Sedgewick machines but please don't drill the casting. Presuming the tables were coplanar with the bolts done up after you shimmed it and the knives properly set as you thought (that it was planing properly) it seems probable that something has moved. It's...

Helical vs. Spiral Cutterhead for my MiniMax FS35 JOINTER-PLANER? BRAND?

A quick look just now brought up this video for Tersa knives: https://tersaknives.com/pages/tersa-videos They seem to use centrifugal force to lock. Do they if changed that fast truly go back in at the correct height? (bearing mind that given truly flat tables around 0.002in above the outfeed...

Helical vs. Spiral Cutterhead for my MiniMax FS35 JOINTER-PLANER? BRAND?

Silent Power is a trade name used by Felder/Hammer on various of their in house cutting tools and heads Benton. Some detail on the advantages of insert heads would be helpful Roger. I'm on stock knives and have never looked closely at insert heads because the machine was bought a few years...

Helical vs. Spiral Cutterhead for my MiniMax FS35 JOINTER-PLANER? BRAND?

I don't run an insert cutter head but might the type and size of insert fitted be a consideration in selecting an insert cutter head? There seem to be lots of low cost aftermarket suppliers of inserts on Amazon etc. (no idea what the quality is like) Might it make sense to choose a head which...

    More P/T woes

Hi Steve. There's a pretty detailed step by step bottom up rebuild of a Sedgewick PT here - not your model and you probably don't need a full rebuild but perhaps informative: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/sedgwick-mb-planer-thicknesser-full-refurbishment.136008/

    More P/T woes

Hi Steve. I'm not familiar with Sedgewick PTs but think that the outfeed table is bolted down on a horizontal surface on the chassis while the infeed is slid back and forwards on sloped ramps for depth of cut adjustment. A few thoughts. There are quite a few inter dependent alignments on a PT...

Help with Identification of a Board - Maybe Elm?

Ta guys. Great that it turns out to be walnut although I can't for the life of me remember how it might have come to be in the store. It's been there for a very long time (in the under roof storage area to the left of the rack in the pic) - near to 30 years I suspect.so It's definitely well...

    MS Outlook replacement

That's very encouraging Eric. Thank you. It's great to get feedback from a down to earth practicality oriented user. I have a heavy duty bench build about 3/4 complete at present, but once that's done there should be room to get stuck in on Linux.

    MS Outlook replacement

Ta for the input Eric. The fan is probably the only moving item in my laptop so I'll have to strip it again and see what's going on. The laptop was a top spec Asus in 2016. It's had a new keyboard which is acting up again (keys stop working) - am using an external. I have a sneaky feeling that...
