• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

How to use files - film

I thought some of you might enjoy it as much as I did. Back in the days when they left the credits on screen long enough to read them!

    Lovely photo, my favourite weather.

    Fish Dishes?

I've never tried gurnard, and that's got me looking again at the fish in Cardiff market - I know they have good quality, but parking in the city is such a pain these days. I may have to grit my teeth and head there. This is their FB page...

That time of the year already

Apparently it's in for the winter :-) It's a lovely bike, but the engine blew on track Saturday so it's in for a rebuild in the warm. Since my daughter left for university, the house does seem to be becoming an extension of the workshop. Which I rather like tbh, one of the few benefits of not...

That time of the year already

First of the season. Fret not, the rain and mild air's back in Wales tomorrow, apparently.

    Bowl in ash or beech

I agree. I find most low bowls with more-or-less vertical sides end up looking like dog bowls but this is really nice, Andy. And a nice foot.

    Fish Dishes?

:-) Now that's something I'd like to try cooking. Again, it seems odd that such soups/ casseroles aren't so common in the UK?

    Fish Dishes?

I skinned both sides and trimmed the outer fins, I watched a Rick Stein video on how to and it worked well. I even cooked the skins for my dog. I remember my mum working hard to remove the flesh from the little bones at the edges after she'd eaten the main part, and did the same but it certainly...

    Fish Dishes?

It's just an issue for me, it aggravates my small intestine apparently. My understanding is the same as yours, the nutrition is good - and so is the taste!

    Fish Dishes?

Well, I've got a bit stuck on sea-farmed bass, it's fairly cheap and delicious. I'd prefer wild but there aren't any nearby and we've still not caught anything big enough to keep. But Dover sole was on offer today behind the fish counter, 20% discount, so I couldn't resist. I've been...

Don’t forget your covid jabs folks.

I had to check just now - apparently it's 'Shingrix [which] is a non-live recombinant adjuvanted subunit shingles vaccine. It does not contain any live virus.' (I understand the last bit.) A new thing which came out last year, you have a second jab between 8 weeks and 6 months after the first...

Don’t forget your covid jabs folks.

The last thing I want to see is my medical records, rather not think about them tbh. Best live in complete ignorance. Today I had flu and pneumonia jabs, I declined my second shingles jab and will get it in a couple of weeks - three in one day?! I seem to get covid jabs every few months. With...

    Baguettes?

Thanks all - I'll try Sainsbury's, I've not been in there for years, and I've never used Ocado but that baguette certainly looks worth a go. I bought a nice bread machine a couple of years ago, but like many kitchen gadgets it now sits unused most of the time. I need to fire it up again - in...

    Baguettes?

Waitrose: Today's - and they're consistently like this: not properly browned (especially toward the centre), not crispy. and the interior is nothing like a French baguette, more like a regular sandwich loaf. Is it the same in all Waitrose(s?), or just ours? I've found Tesco is better, and...

    Fish Dishes?

What time should I arrive, and should I bring a bottle? Fabulous catch, Nick.

What would you do? It’s not wood.

22 summers ago, my then partner and I went to a family wedding in France, and as part of the occasion we all visited a local vineyard and we bought a case of their Sauternes. About nine months later, our son was born shortly before midnight. On my way home from the hospital, I stopped in a...

Another post not about wood. NHS this time

I've not read that - apparently all public bodies have to have a Welsh language policy, and Welsh is often described as desirable, and clearly in some posts it'll be necessary, but I've not heard of it being a recruitment problem. More generally, 'Latest Census data showed a decline in the...

    Fish Dishes?

That's great, thanks Adrian - I'll try those sauces and herbs, tho the foams etc might be a tad beyond me. And I'd not heard of browning the lemon. ps I'd no idea that tartar sauce is based around capers, I love the salted ones (tho I don't think my gp approves...)

    Fish Dishes?

Browsing the aisles of our local supermarket, I noticed behind the fish counter bass fillets being sold off for £1.09 each. I was told they're fine for today or tomorrow, so I bought two. I wouldn't usually have bought fish toward the end of their date but thought I'd try, especially given some...
