• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Imported tat

I’ve just spotted a story claiming that the air cargo industry can’t cope with the current demand for Temu goods. I thought that the tools sold by this company had been soundly slated as poor quality, it seems that other products are so cheap they sell in quantity.

You will only be shown posts you haven’t read unless you override using the button at the top left of the posts which reads “ show only unread” it’s a bit of a nuisance.

Gate conundrum - how to fix this?

I’m wondering if it would be possible to increase the closing power of the operator on the left hand gate to apply enough pressure to take the twist out of the left hand gate, perhaps by packing out the hinge side of the operating arm and/ or moving the fixings a little. If the posts are truly...

Gate conundrum - how to fix this?

Do the gates come into contact with any kind of stop at the bottom of the two meeting stiles?

    Flattening an oilstone

Steve asked many posts back about this and I’ve finally got round to offering an answer. I’m sure that there are numerous methods but the only one I’ve ever needed is very simple, a cup of yellow builders sand, water, and a piece of 6 mm plate glass. The glass is used on a flat bench top with a...

    Garden Table

I also used loose inserts together with a wobble saw to house them, they were made of iroko like the table. One of the joints has failed as you can see ( about 11 O clock in the photo) can’t really complain after nearly thirty years. An An angled shooting board is the answer to accurate joints...

    An oilstone box

I see it all now! I’m another who had never thought of turning over the box.

    An oilstone box

Not sure what you mean, but the pins are normally just under one end of the base. They work but don’t last very long. My original idea was that the screw could easily be replaced, however, the hardened screw seems to be hard enough to last decades! P

    An oilstone box

Yes, if you look closely the remains of the original pins are still visible in my box, the screw has only been in use for twenty years or so.

    An oilstone box

Just two suggestions that might be of interest Forming a 3mm deep “foot”at each end of the base improves stability in use. The use of a cs screw with just 1mm projecting through the base gives a good grip on the bench.

    Garden Table

This is a simpler version of my original table, very much easier to make but the slats are free to distort a little.

    Garden Table

The above might be of interest, the joints between the outer rails and slats are grooves and short tenons secured with epoxy glue. I think that the gaps in the top are the key to preventing expansion destroying the structure. The method of making the supporting legs allowed me to use the 25 mm...

    Ovoloe or Gothic spoke shave

That’s very strange, I’ve never seen one of those in 65 years in the trade!

    Cascamite Glue NOT MIXING!

If it’s from Polyvine just throw it away. There is no chance of a refund! There are lots of previous posts on this subject.

    David and Jays touring toolshed

How many of you have spotted that the tool sheds doors have been braced the wrong way ( or perhaps hung one the wrong sides) I hope the craftspeople they visit are demonstrating more expertise.

Any reason not to use sanding sealer ?

One coat of celullose sanding sealer followed by two coats of Ronseal polyurethane satin interior varnish is my favourite finish. It gets a very light sand and is then waxed. The first photo of a window board of a south facing window which fad been in use for more than twenty five years. It has...

    Thingamejigs

Steve. All those curves or notches are not really vital, I’ve used one many times and never found use for more than a straight line with a single notch.

How best to chop up planks?

As suggested already, trenching the shelves in with a dovetail housing may keep them flat. My preference for bookcase shelves is the use of library strips and a return edge on the front to conceal any small gaps. This would probably not suit your design though. Piece of ash veneered ply would...

    Axminster closures

I understand that Axi are closing at least one store, does anyone know what’s happened to the demand for tools? Or is this just another symptom of the curse of the drop shippers.
