• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Anyone repair their own shoes?

Thanks Mike, that makes for some interesting reading. I've not heard of the term "splits" before, nor what's involved in the process of veg tanning, using oak. In regards to old couches, I was referring to making an apron from, as I think that's where I would be drawing the line from anymore...

    Anyone repair their own shoes?

Kinda gave up on making use of the leather offcuts bag, well at least for the time being... (though would likely salvage some for an apron), if I tripped across a nice couch getting skipped, and there wouldn't be that much sewing involved that a machine would be needed. not holding my breath...

For the french residents among us..27 th Feb 2025, chez Lidl, "combi" sharpening stones €6.99

Had to look up those, just to see what they looked like... Can't say I wasn't sort'a pleased! :D

    Big bandsaw needed

Freehand dressing will not likely achieve a good result... well not by doing it safely, i.e turning wheels by hand. Rigging up a block shouldn't be too difficult, whether with abrasives or scraping. This is a lot more foolproof than attempting the whole profile in one go, due to the upper wheel...

For the french residents among us..27 th Feb 2025, chez Lidl, "combi" sharpening stones €6.99

I was nearly tempted to get them last year, and had a wee look at an opened red/white hone last week, seemed alright, fairly tidy looking, though thought strange the base being a lot larger than the hones. edit: looking online, seems there is something inbetween the hone and base, which I...

    A belt sander revamp?

Hello again folks Thought I'd post a little update on things, as I've got the thing on wheels now, but have other stuff to do, so it'll be a while before I can get back to it. The latch design is extremely successful, though there's a slight knack to using it. I didn't foresee that whilst...

    Sunday 02/02/25 in Lidl

My missus brother got one and it let the magic smoke out, may have been the first time use, or very new, though was likely tasked with a job for a circular saw.

    Big bandsaw needed

I made one for my saw to suit the existing round fence rail, though evidently didn't really think things through! Something what simply lifts off is much more sensible, with only a length of flat bar needed, as seen on many saws like the Far Eastern Felder x10 machines.. Small beans...

    Diamond plates

I haven't looked on the bay to see if single sided diamond hones, what's bonded to a hefty steel plate are still being sold or infact made, and whether the same quality as the ITS (which I presume are the same as on the Faithful hones?) What's the price difference between the current ITS...

    Diamond plates

I use a fancy Dia-sharp 1200 grit, what I got from Stu-mac (I thought it were finer, but seems I'm wrong) It will put a mirror finish on the back of a chisel, and compared to a 4000 grit King waterstone, seems a fair bit finer, as the waterstone will leave a hazy finish. I also use some cheapie...

    Back bevel

I don't polish the cap irons, just honed on the fine stone. Re-curved, pretend the curve is non existent... regarding geometry, treated like those new fangled types. I've not got my own variation on this, it's either you use the cap iron, or you don't. i.e the shaving straightens up when it's...

    Back bevel

I use a regular Bailey's too, with a 50 degree honed edge on my cap irons, open mouth as not to clog the plane, (clogging being only noticeable when cap iron is honed beyond 45 deg) and a very fine camber on my smoother (obviously)... as my cap irons aren't honed super steeply, i.e enough to...

    Glue up when cold

After unsuccessfully attempting to patch up a door... which I had been storing for a day or so in the house, and thereafter glued at a height a bit under a chair level, I figured I'd need to up my game a bit. I suggest getting one of those infrared thermometer guns, should you not have one...

    List of things to do!

But it's missing the arrows, and where are the numbers?... not to mention in-between's, strikethrough's, scribbles, boxes, ticks and measurements? If I were to guess... looks to have all the hallmark's of a pre-list to me Duke? I mean those corners of you're jotter, aren't even rolled up yet!
