• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    CNC wood turning advice wanted.

A few years back I made a couple of chess sets on the cnc machine at work, out of aluminium. I'm thinking of having a go at making some wooden sets to go with the boards I make - probably maple, walnut, possibly rosewood. The only tooling we use is carbide, and the smallest r/h knife tool I...

White French polish - does it separate?

I bought some white French polish a few days ago, for the first time. Is it normal that it separates out? My normal blonde, special pale and buttons don't do this.

Ever wonder how they did computing before computers?

I found this fascinating - how fire control computers worked in navy battleships in WW2. Using cams, gears, differentials and other types of mechanics to do maths - some of it pretty advanced. lr1uK24SND8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr1uK24SND8 Part 2 5GZa63x3k60...

    Another two chessboards.

Thanks folks :) Chopping boards - I've made a few :) When I started making chessboards it's what my failures became! One chopping, one chess This was a chopping board from the start - a house-warming gift.

Jerrims Engineers Vice - what to do with it.

I picked up this Jerrims vice that was destined for the scrap. My wife has asked if I'd like to donate it to the small firm she works at, but it's so unusual I'd like to know a bit more about it, especially if it might be worth anything, before I blindly give it away. The normally 'fixed' jaws...

    Sabre 250 Guide Bearings

Went to use my little RP Sabre 250 today to resaw some 3" stock. I noticed sparks coming off the top back bearing. After a check, the top back, one of the top sides, and one of the bottom side bearings are all seized solid. The ones that aren't seized feel like they have sand in them. (The saw...

    Drawing

I can honestly say I only ever enjoyed smoking tobacco - black cherry at that time if irc :) It could take a month or two to finish one of the large ones. Over time I sold pretty much everything I did, all I have left are one or two personal favourites and some unfinished stuff. I haven't...

    Drawing

Back in the early 90's, I used to sell copies of my drawings around the pubs of Birmingham for beer money. Black and white so they could be photocopied and laminated at a reasonable price - albeit they were A1 size. Both of these are only straight lines - I sold a lot of copies, they appealed...

    Dowelmax - First Use.

Over the weekend I used my new Dowelmax jig for the first time. Absolutely brilliant bit of kit. I've always shied away from dowels - accuracy was more luck than judgement, and using more than two dowels in one run meant I'd normally end up re-drilling holes oversize. This jig makes things...

    The importance of double checking.

Quick update. Had a refund, and a reply Yeah...... thing is it's bowed along the thick edge, not the thin. Just if anyone is interested, I got talking to a retired toolmaker at work, he said he'd seen that often. It comes from being surface ground incorrectly. Instead of putting the bar...

    The importance of double checking.

Needing a piece of steel for a jig I ordered this - Indexa GFS Gauge Plate 15x5x500 The important bit of the spec was this Stupidly, I assumed it would be perfect - it's gauge plate, after all. So I cut it to length, drilled it, test fitted it, and it wasn't even close to fitting. So...
