• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

American here in Oundle (Peterborough) - Brand new to woodworking

If it does the job, it's good enough. Looks are (relatively) unimportant. Save your time - and finesse - for when your creation is highly visible or decorative. Spending time getting something "purty" that might then get 'clattered' by unexpected workshop events (a.k.a. SNAFU's) is...

    A Cautionary Video

Wood 'springs' on initial cut, binds to blade, so Plonkimus maximus sticks a wedge in to hold the kerf open...resumes cut, kick back occurs, pulling workplace back, saw teeth catch wedge, "Bernie? The bolt!"

    I'm not OTT.

And a thumb if you didn't use the 'over ' grip....where the thumb did NOT go under the lever, in opposition to the fingers, but instead, joined the other digits, on top! I think many of you, using the old diesel cement mixers, will have learnt that trick, the hard way.

    Absolutely, Mike.

    I'm not OTT.

I droive all kinds of Landies whilst in the T.A. for 27 years. I was always thoroughly glad to "sign them back in" at the end of an exercise or expedition. Rough, not all that tough, thirsty and utterly basic; uncomfortable for long periods. In some of them, you filled both fuel tanks by lifting...

    What have you "lost" today...?

I sympathise hugely with all here reporting migrating tools, in multiplicity, with knobs on. I too have this problem, especially twice a week when my tool boxes drag me to a heritage railyard nearby to carry out wood transplants on ailing carriages and occasionally, 80 miles away north or 125...

Mike builds a teardrop (hatch detail)

Mike, I in no way belittle your innovation, nor execution; quite the opposite, I applaud it, good lateral thinking. Those gas bottles are top heavy, because of their reduced base diameter. Ergo, going around a corner, their angular moment of force (hope that's the right technical phrase) will...

Mike builds a teardrop (hatch detail)

Seconded. I had a Pennine trailer tent, 675Kg (unladen) if I recall correctly, and the two bottles in the front locker had to have the 'waist' straps cinched up tight. I forgot once - on Irish roads - and that is a mistake you only make once.

That's the hardest step, Mark; the act of holding them to give reassurance. Well done.

Andy? Not just a pressure consideration; see my, and Lons's, replies earlier re ventilated gas lockers. You need a vent in the bottom as gas is heavier than air. In a canal boat, this is especially dangerous as it 'fills' the body of the boat if a leak occurs.

    Lightening strike

For some obscure reason, biting insects, from various genera, are surging in population numbers this summer in northern England. We haven't had the "burn off' and desert-like landscapes of London and the Home Counties, our grass is still green (only just) so maybe the increased temperature has...

    B17 flyover

In some ways, the engine is immaterial I think I recall the dual gearbox to to run the props was inside the central boss of the propellers? I know the feathering/coarse/fine pitch gears were. Better engineers than me, please castigate and correct.

    Well, that's good!

"Winemakers love this summer. The long hot dry days have helped ripen the fruit and "keep disease at bay", as Luck puts it. There is a subtle shift too. More sun means more sugar in the grapes, which will mean higher alcohol content." BBC News, online. There was a bit of pessimism expressed...
