• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Seven Heirlooms - Rear view!

Exactly, you find a seam of clay near the surface and dig it out with your hands. Leave the pot for a while in baking hot sun to 'cook'. Mud bricks are still made in exactly the same way - Rob

    Seven Heirlooms - Rear view!

It's this; a coiled pot; no tools of any sort needed so it's entirely 100% 'handmade' - Rob

    Seven Heirlooms - Rear view!

The provenance paperwork now looks excellent, but I can see you've dragged David Pye's book 'The Nature and Art of Workmanship' off the bookshelf which is a fascinating read in which he explores topics such as 'handmade' and what that actually means. The example he gives is that there's only...

    Seven Heirlooms - Rear view!

Can I suggest that you alter 'handcrafted' to 'hand built' or 'hand made'; whenever I hear or see the word 'crafted' it's just irksome and intensely irritating. The bottom two lines need the margins shrinking a little as well as the fourth line from the top. I'm also intrigued by 'the great...

Compulsory reading for my uni coarse at Shoreditch in the 70's. I have both his books (hardback editions) in the bookcase - Rob

Post a photo of the last thing you made...

I hope it arrives shortly or otherwise it's probably lost and I'll need to find a replacement:cry: - Rob Edit - there are a few on The Bay of Fleas so it shouldn't be too difficult to source another

Keeps the 'little grey cells' (or what's left of them:ROFLMAO:) ticking over Andy. Has the little wee envelope arrived in Bristol? - Rob

The first part of the 'V' door has been done on the JK 'V' Door Cabinet in English Walnut. So far, so good but I donned the thinking cap and realised that a raised jig shown below to glue each side at a time: ...would make life a lot easier and ensure the door was out of 'wind'. The outer...

Very, very tricky to do really well...I know 'cos I've tried. This bloke: ...knew exactly how to do a gouge finish which can be left straight from the tool (Look at 'Peter 14' on the linke) - Rob

Am I correct that Stanley have stopped making Nr 4’s?

Just looked at those on the Bezos site; the paint job is hideous!:ROFLMAO: - Rob

    Seven Heirlooms - Rear view!

I sincerely hope that you've checked and triple checked that the instruments will fit in the cases...but I know you will have. FWIW Malc, I think that the purchase of top quality carrying cases are worthy of your instruments and effort to make them. Personally, I wouldn't have ordered anything...

    Seven Heirlooms - Rear view!

Worth pursuing Malc, but the salient point is that you still need cases for the instruments as the ones you have are nfg, so what's the next step as first n'foremost you have to find some more cases and second n'foremost, you have to dispose, sell whatever the existing ones?? - Rob Edit -...

Am I correct that Stanley have stopped making Nr 4’s?

That's a shame because these are and they're better than just 'good'. I have two, both vintage 'British Racing Green' planes in pristine condition: ..... with the rather good, hand forged O1 cutter as well as a later Block Plane - Rob

WIP - The English Woodworker's new backed stool

I've had a rethink and won't be going. The event is good with some great names (Philly Edwards won't be there) but it's held in a hall about the size of a school gymnasium. You can literally walk round it in ten minutes, see what there is to see, have a natter at the various exhibitors stands...

Done- hammer handle for Japanese gennou hammer

I didn't realise that it's a 'thing' with Gennou hammers not to fit a wedge(s) in the head...or maybe it's just the posh artisan ones? I've just checked mine in the 'shop and it has both a steel and wooden wedge. I don't think I'd trust using any sort of Birmingham screwdriver without the head...

    Smart meter

Our 'leccy is with Octopus, who informed us a while ago that we needed a new meter, which they duly installed; it also contains a SM but at the same time, the gas meter was also replaced with a smart one, so as I understand it the actual important bit is inside the meter wot talks via t'interweb...

WIP - The English Woodworker's new backed stool

I also met him a couple of times, once at one of Peter Sefton's Open Days (alas no more) and the other was at the vast show held at Cressing Temple Barn a few years ago. Sadly there doesn't appear to be a large woodwork event held anymore in the South of England - Rob

    2 measuring questions .

To be honest, I haven't used those pointy or mushroom tips yet, but one day they'll be just the very thing to make an inside measurement. The one's I have used a fair bit: ...small ball ends, which can be used with the extension rods - Rob
