• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Multimeter / s

The Kaiweets Clamp Meter I bought from Amazon is much more compact than my Amprobe AM-520 Multimeter.

    Multimeter / s

I bought this one a few months ago as I needed a clamp meter to diagnose a current draw problem on a motor, It's not particularly expensive and I think it covers 99% of what a DIY user would need. A nice feature is the no-contact voltage tester, which gives you an indication if a cable is live...

    Axminster update

It’s just doesn’t work in this day and age when your main competitors are online “fulfilment centre” style businesses that Amazon pioneered. You have companies like ITS, PowerToolMate, D&M, etc… who have a big warehouse full of tools ready to go and the employees are running around all day...

    Axminster update

It's employees, Rob. As much of a horrid thing it is to say, employees have really become the death of business. It's not the employees' fault, but for most businesses, having employees is just too costly due to wages and other factors. Axminster must employ several times the number of people...

    Axminster update

It's probably down to Axminster expanding too widely and not being able to maintain it in recent years due to a lower amount of hobbyists taking up woodwork. They had several premises, including a manufacturing arm, whereas D&M only have the one shop and just sell tools as far as I'm aware. I...

Lie Nielsen No. 60 1/2 Block Plane

For £100, I ain't buying it! I did try to offer £15 purely for the novelty of it, but it was automatically declined, no surprise to me really if they're asking for £100.

Lie Nielsen No. 60 1/2 Block Plane

I've always fancied a Lie Nielsen No. 60 1/2 Block Plane but I've never brought myself to actually buy one, they're around £200 now, I should've bought one when Axminster were selling them for £100 a few years ago! I occasionally look on eBay in the hopes of finding an excellent deal, but as yet...

    Dry January

Since January is in five days and you have five bottles, the solution is obvious... 😁

Brass framed "Ultimatum" brace by Atkinson Brothers

It would be very interesting to see how it was made, it must've been tricky to turn the brass handle with it all looking like it's a single piece of what I assume is a brass casting. I imagine it would've been hideously expensive when it was new. I wonder if it was a justifiable purchase over a...

    Sad news, Phil Pascoe

What a bummer to read on Christmas Day. Phil gave me a few books for my collection and expected absolutely nothing in return; he was a true gentleman.

    Sherwood Die Stock

I don't envy you having to cut a 3/4" thread with a die stock. I would assume it's 1.5" as it seems all the ones I can find online are that size, but if you have a metal lathe handy, you can always make a 2" - 1.5" adapter for a 2" die stock and also have the threading power of a larger die stock.

    Spindle Moulder Fence material

If it helps, on that thread you linked to, I eventually went with the ground flat plate. It was expensive but it was my only option at the time before I had a milling machine. It was also an absolute workout to hacksaw the clearance angles on each side of the plates, probably an hour of cutting...

    eBay listings and bladed items

So I went on eBay to buy a spokeshave as one of mine broke after it broke in my hand doing some shaping work, I was met with this when I tried to buy it. What's even more silly is that I already have a credit card on the eBay account that I use for most purchases. I am so glad they're getting...

    Spindle moulder fence

I saw a Sedgwick fence advertised on Facebook earlier today, but it was £500!

How much to make these ?

I know people earning more than £60k per year just doing basic carpentry work, self-employed working for a single builder, so very little paperwork and overheads, you have to work hard for it though. The trouble with "how much will this cost..." as others have pointed out is that there is a...

    ukworkshop

£30 a year isn't too bad if you use the site a lot and you feel you get a lot out of it (I personally wouldn't want to support a super shady American company anyway), but who in their right mind is going to pay £200 a year for a forum subscription?

Advice on storing a newly made window

Windows will be subject to seasonal humidity changes once fitted anyway so I wouldn't worry too much about where you keep it, you could probably even keep it outside under cover, obviously it's best to keep it from getting overly wet.

    Window opener swelling

It does feel oily afterwards, I've also had times where it's taken over a week to dry, but I put that down to too liberal of a coat.

    Window opener swelling

I have used the WR base coat and Osmo UV resistant oil on external work before, it just peels off within a few months and looks terrible. I think this is the case with most “clear” external finishes because the sun bleaches the underlying wood regardless. I liken an opaque or semi-opaque finish...

    Window opener swelling

I usually put enough of a leading edge on the opening side so that when the corner of the casement is near the corner of the mullion as it opens, it's the same gap as when the casement is closed. When it's closed, I aim for a 3mm gap all the way around. I've never liked Osmo as an exterior...
