• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

That might be it then, a combination of the new motor and a regreased bearing might make it a bit slow until it's done a bit of work to circulate the grease a bit. When you pack grease into a bearing it turns into a churn, and you get a surprising amount of friction, if you pack too much grease...

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

That wouldn’t be too unusual if it’s only marginally slower to start, new bearings in the motor will be a bit stiffer than in the old motor which will cause it to be a bit lethargic. However it could also be binding somewhere else, like the motor was installed slightly skew for example or that...

Fitting windows into a shiplap wall

I personally would fit the windows sat just behind the ship lap with the ship lap overlapping around the perimeter of the frame, and the cill extension protruding out beyond the ship lap.

Wood Repair / Wood Putty / Wood Filler

RepairCare is popular amongst painters for that kind of work. Hack out all the rot, gob the resin in and trowel it off flush with the rest of the woodwork and paint it over. I personally wouldn’t consider it a proper “repair” and there are a lot of snake oil merchants touting it as a better...

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

Nearly 20 years is pretty good service for a machine that gets a fair bit of hard work. I wonder what caused the winding to burn out, I would investigate to see if there's any obvious reason it burned like a short in the winding, it's quite unlikely but you don't want to install the new motor...

Pathetic attempt - first dovetail joint ever done.

I echo everyone else’s comments, a very decent first attempt, all of us have been there. It’s actually not far off the same quality as you would find in mass produced hand-cut drawers, so long as the joints would hold together it was completely fine!

Helical vs. Spiral Cutterhead for my MiniMax FS35 JOINTER-PLANER? BRAND?

It may work with your machine, but you do need to bear in mind that because the Tersa knives slide out of the end of the head that they’re not suitable for every machine, especially thicknessers as they’re usually completely enclosed with large bearings at each end. They work best on surface...

Helical vs. Spiral Cutterhead for my MiniMax FS35 JOINTER-PLANER? BRAND?

But contrary to handwork, it's often easier on machines to work against the grain than with it, though you can end up with significant tear out. Because the machine is cutting short grain, it just chops it off into crumbs of dust, where if you're cutting with the grain you're peeling shavings...

Helical vs. Spiral Cutterhead for my MiniMax FS35 JOINTER-PLANER? BRAND?

Something to keep in mind is that a lot of the American and Chinese helical and spiral cutter heads aren't designed with chip limiting in mind because there aren't such requirements as there is in Europe, which can make them much more likely to kickback and accidents more severe than...

    Staircase modification

My grandfather's house was an ex-council house with square landing at the bottom of a narrow passage way, which then went onto a three-kite winder left of the landing so a 180-degree turn from the passage, up about 8 steps and then another landing and then two steps up to the left at 90-degrees...

    Staircase modification

Probably not much worse than trying to get furniture up a stair with a 180-degree turn in it! Yes, in an ideal world, the lift is supplementary to the staircase.

    Staircase modification

It all depends on how much room you have, naturally increasing the going (tread depth) will increase the overall length of the stair which may cause it to foul elsewhere such as a doorway, wall, or as @duke @HOJ pointed out, ceilings. You can always put a winder at the bottom or top of the...

    More P/T woes

I would check that the bolts that hold down the infeed table are relatively snug before getting carried away, if they're not snug and the table isn't sitting on the slide ways correctly, it can droop a considerable amount.

    Removing screws

There are certain tricks to help get screws out, but those screws looked pretty far gone on the thread anyway so most likely would not have come out with a screwdriver regardless. Sometimes a set of left-handed drill bits is useful for work like this, the drill heats up the piece during...

Blades for a DeWALT DWE7485 table saw.

As I said in my post, you shouldn't have any issue running a 2.8mm blade rather than a 2.4mm blade, it's only 0.2mm on each side of the blade which is an insignificant amount and the motor should hardly notice the extra load during usual cutting. The general rule of thumb with riving knives is...

    Bending steel garden edging

You shouldn't have much trouble doing those bends cold. I've done similar sized bends with 3mm steel in a wood vice with the form clamped in with the steel and then used the extra length of the steel as a bit of a lever to help bend the steel over the form, then cut it off the length of steel...

    Bending steel garden edging

How tight of a bend are you trying to achieve? 3mm thick steel is tough to bend around a really tight radius, but something like a 50mm radius shouldn't be impossible to do cold by hammering it around a solid form. A bonfire might work to make the steel more malleable, but it would be very...

    Evri possible means?

I've always get a sinking feeling whenever I get an email "Dispatched with EVRI" or previously, Hermes. I had to return an Amazon order the other day, supposedly to be collected by EVRI the next day. With Amazon you only get a refund if they collect the item, so one day passes and it hadn't...

Blades for a DeWALT DWE7485 table saw.

You should have no issue using any of the slightly wider 2.8mm kerf blades, which are more commonly available. I recommend CMT blades, which are of superior quality to those sold by DeWalt and fairly priced. https://www.scosarg.com/tooling/circular-saw-blades?diameter=3772 What is the reason...

    Shed Permitted Development Rights

That all depends on whether it's had a proper survey on it in the past to make clear the boundaries where garden stops and field begins, even so an authority may use land registry documents, OS maps, and even old satellite photography to prove that you have unlawfully extended the curtilage of...
