• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Exterior choice of wood

I make Louvre’s at least couple of times a year for a complex that’s south facing and some windows are approximately 20 meters from the med in Andalucía, so exposed to the weather. The original ones made in the 80s were Pine, I’m replacing with Sipo, not noticed any warping. Will try and attach...

Mike builds a teardrop (hatch detail)

The rubbery foam that’s used for pipe insulation, cut up on the bandsaw to the correct size would push in nicely and don’t think it would stick to appoxy

    Patio table refurbishment

Looking at the finished top I’m wondering if there’s two different timbers there? The lighter planks deffo look like Iroko The reddish ones look more like one from the Sapele family but I could definitely be wrong. I’ve made quite a few windows and doors and worktops from Iroko and don’t ever...

Cordless tool battery management for optimal usage over time... ?

This is not scientific advice but what I’ve been told that batteries like to be used so don’t let them go flat in storage. As to brands of batteries I’ve used most and the only ones I’ve found that lasted is Festool.

    Unwanted calls

Steve as an expat you can have fun with spam calls, answer the call in your poshest English accent and they generally put the phone straight down. It works for me most of the time until the call is actually from someone you know….

    Patio table refurbishment

I made my Iroko widows approximately 20 years ago and then stained and varnished with Renner water based varnish. They are still looking good with zero maintenance. The great thing about Iroko is it doesn’t move and it’s the movement that destroys most paint finishes on joinery. Renner paint has...

    Patio table refurbishment

I would personally leave it naked and let it go grey, maintenance free😃 I also like the patina that comes with the odd spill here and there, it tells the story of life. But I know most like that new shiny look, including my dear wife. I’ve tried different oils on outside tables and can’t...

    Fire

Hope the fire is put out very soon!!! It’s very subduing when you see it and see the aftermath. Two weeks ago on a Thursday I left the home I was building a library in and saw the start of a fire, got home and the client messaged to say the hole area was evacuated, I was a little concerned as...

    More of those lab benches.

I always clean areas to be glued with acetone. I generally use a D4 poly expanding glue on Iroko Many years ago one of my clients called me to look at her Iroko windows that would not close, basically all 4 glue joints had failed, apparently these windows had not been fitted long so my guess...

    Reclaimed parquet

I would recommend a rip blade for this, the fewer the tooth count the better. I also have a hord of reclaimed oak parquet, only this lot was fitted with polymer. It came up with some of the cement screed still attached 😅

Fitting a back-to-wall WC with an offset fitting.

I And you need to be careful if they get out of the sewer. Back in the 90s I was working in SW10 London and three of us got very ill, me and my brother were unable to keep food down for over 3 weeks. My local doctor got concerned and started an investigation, eventually the client’s daughter in...

Anyone used a drop down threshold seal on exterior door?

If it's for a threshold on a period looking door theses drop down set up are almost invisible so are an ideal compromise. On my doors I supply my customers with we use a double Deventer seal, they do not look traditional but keep 100% of wind and rain out. The old reclaimed door on my house has...

Anyone used a drop down threshold seal on exterior door?

Here in southern Spain they are often used and in our climate they are ok. How they would hold up in an exposed Uk environment I cant say but at a guess with driving rain they might keep out 80% The ones here are basically a hardish rubber that comes down when the door is closed.
