• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Ian’s new workshop. The Wonky Donkey. Wiring all done - ish

In Sweden they do have good paint for normal prices, so I don't need to bring it with me. But, going by what I am used to seeing around here in the countryside, maintenance is just not high on the list of Swedes. When you see a house that is properly painted, you immediately notice it.

Bed - Finished and sleepable inable!

Yeah, that's why I referred to the Domino Joinery Table from Veritas. They have a built-in solution for thin stock. Although "built-in" is a bit much, because it still is shimming. The guy's name is Ola Carmonius. He has a real good knack for making jigs. Finsnickeri is Swedish for a (high end)...

Bed - Finished and sleepable inable!

I realise it is pricey, but Veritas have a very nice Domino table with which you can do this. Or you can build the original by Carmonius Finsnickeri yourself. He has provided all the information you need for that. Nothing wrong with Steve's way of doing it though.

    Another two headboards to make.

Steve is right, be mindful of proper ventilation. Even if you don't see any mould, it could still be there inside the mattress itself. And even if it is not, the warm and moist conditions in the mattresses will be an almost ideal environment for all sorts of creatures to live and propagate in...

    White-tailed deer.

Yeah, that's what dogs can do for you. It is our experience too that normally they will adjust quite well to their new life. They just need time and an environment where they can build up their confidence. Sadly, Shermann was too damaged for that.

    A little distraction from woodworking

I will certainly keep following this thread to see what you have done!

    White-tailed deer.

The roe over here have a fixed route. Almost every day you can see them walking by the house at around the same time. I know they are the same individuals, because one of them has one of its front legs missing. Luckily it seems to be thriving, as we have seen this one for about 2 years now. I...

    A little distraction from woodworking

This really is impressive (and interesting and beautiful) to look at! As a former aerospace engineer I am used to making things as light as possible. Quite different from what I see here. But I can at least appreciate all the thinking and calculating that must have gone into preparing for this...

Spot for a cabin, delayed for 5 years, maybe this year.

Man, I thought I had it good with my view and the animals around here. But I don't come even close to what you have. That really is a beautiful spot. I can understand why you'd like to build a cabin there.

    Bois de Steve

Thanks for the info. I am thinking of trying this out on an Opal plum I have. Would be nice if it succeeds.

    Bois de Steve

I feel your pain. About 2 months ago we planted 2 Cornus Kousa of the "Schmetterling" variety and they were doing great. They were really beautiful to look at. Were I say, because yesterday morning we found they had been plundered by a roe during the night. There were prints all over the place...

Looking for a good oak stain

Is there a specific reason you are not sure of using Osmo in this case? My standard finishing process is to use shellac to close the pores and then wipe on 2 layers of Osmo (in my case mostly Osmo Farbig). The results are great, including on oak. The shellac should form a nice barrier between...

Two of my favourite hack saws.

I was lucky enough to inherit a Starrett No. 153 from my wife's father. It is probably more than 60 years old, but easily my favourite hack saw.

    Stuck grub screws

That white stuff is almost certainly from seizing (galling?). Put some anti-seize paste on the threats to prevent it from happening again. Otherwise you'll have the same problem again in the future.

    Hori Hori

I think you will thoroughly enjoy your Hori Hori. I use mine quite often. Together with my Japanese sickle it is probably my most-used garden hand tool. I see yours has no finish on its handle. It's better that way. I had to improvise some finger guards on mine because its handle can become...

    Scalpel safety sheath

Thanks for the inspiration! That's something I will definitely make myself when I can find the time.

Cut & Dried - latest print run

You are, of course, correct. I misread. A print run is not the same as a new edition. Still, I hope and expect many people will enjoy your book as much as I did/do.

Cut & Dried - latest print run

Congrats with the new edition! I bought the 2018 version from Lost Art years ago and still like it very much. Thanks for writing it. I learned a lot from it. Which to me, as a fellow author (although in a completely different field), is the biggest compliment I can give. I think a lot of people...

Hope this is the last ice storm for the winter.

Good thinking! Iced roads can be a nightmare. No use taking unnecessary risks.

Hope this is the last ice storm for the winter.

Bummer! Those are really useful to have in such conditions. Ah well, it always worked good enough the way you did before I had those too. I just am spoiled. Drive safely with all that ice rain I read about. I imagine the roads must be really slippery right now in Canada.
