• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

How not to do Customer Service

I 'm pleased to see that Steve M has had a positive experience with Customer Support from his bank. My recent experience of Customer Support was somewhat different. I recently made a, somewhat rare these days, visit to our local B&Q store a couple of days ago and, inadvertently, left my phone...

    Modern cooking — a rant.

Replying to Ian (Cabinetman), the lambs tongue casserole wasn't in the least appealing; it was worse than school dinners in the 1950s if such a thing was possible. Adrian said "People regularly ate tripe back then (when he was a kid), but you never see it now". I know why; as soon as people...

Well, that day didn't go to plan.

Sorry to hear that, Mike. Hope you are back on the road to recovery some time soon. It's unfortunately a fact that 55% of all accidents occur at home as against less than 1% occurring at work. A lot of attention is given to preventing accidents at work or on the road but accidents at home...

What does a Request Timeout mean on Ping test, Now Starlink,

It's good to know that AndyP has got his wi-fi sorted out. The village where our daughter and family live in France had very dodgy reception due mainly to the fact that they were at the end of the village and the end of the line. The village, one of the larger ones in the area, has about 100...

    Modern cooking — a rant.

On the subject of steak tartare, on my first visit to my then fiancée’s relations in Ostend, they laid on a special buffet. The main dishes served were filet americaine, similar to steak tartare, air dried ham and roll-mops. After the event, I asked her did they ever cook anything or was their...

    Co-op Rip Off Insurers

If you think your car insurance is expensive now, be prepared for a shock once you pass age 80. Last year, aged 81 with a wife aged 78, our car a 5 year old Citroen C3 with 20+ years NCD and living in a quiet suburb of North West Bristol, I was shocked when the renewal premium from John Lewis...

After 53 years I have to take my test again!

Andy, not quite indefinitely as the paper licences are only valid until age 70. After that, you get a plastic card and that has to be renewed every 3 years. I'd be interested to know the reaction of the gendarmes in your area when confronted with a paper licence during one of their "papiers"...

After 53 years I have to take my test again!

After 60+ years, I wouldn’t fancy taking any driving test again. I might just be able to swot up enough to revise and pass the theory part but would worry about coping with the practical. Having driven an automatic for the past 3 years, having to use a manual gearbox to get a full licence might...

Ian, the barrels are rifled. The process is shown at about 11 minutes 30 seconds.

    Beginners Woodworking Category

I think that Scott’s idea could be worthwhile. Whilst there is a wealth of information contained on this forum, much of it is hidden away in threads, some pages long. Although many on here may have had the opportunity to learn basic woodwork in school or known woodworkers who could help them...

For those interested in metal working machinery

Those of you with an interest in metal working might be interested in this You Tube video - It’s a documentary about the fabrication of the Sterling sub-machine gun at the Royal Ordnance Factory at Fazakerley. From the look of the lorry in the opening shots, the machinists clothing and the...

    Conversion - bathroom to en-suite

My cousin was a time served plumber who must roll his eyes at modern day plumbing. He did a full apprenticeship and attended day and evening classes for years to acquire his skills. He worked with chrome, cast iron, stainless steel, copper and lead, could join any one type of pipe to another as...

    Spreadsheet help

Without degenerating into a Four Yorkshiremen debate, when I did my dissertation for my degree, it had to be handwritten, passed to one of the typists in the Department office who then typed the original and 2 carbon copies. Last minute alterations were not welcomed! Fortunately, Tippex had been...

    Simple door

Reading this thread made m wonder how many woodworkers still use rods and templates when making things such as doors and windows. I seem to remember You Tubers like Ollie Bradshaw and Robin Clevett, after sketching out the design on paper, using rods to determine measurements and then making a...

    Unusual winter weather.

Bet it's not like that now, Roger, as we only saw the sun in Bristol for about 15 minutes mid-morning and it's been tipping down ever since.

Retirement , what is the end game.

Retirement is what you make it; the worst thing to do is to do nothing. Being retired means you can spend more time doing what you like most. It also allows you time to go and visit family and spend more time with them rather than them coming to you. It gives you time to go out and about and...

    Flooding

During my time in the TA/TAVR, I used to drive or command one of these Picture from Wikipedia. It had a wading depth, without any preparation, of 3 feet. One weekend when I couldn’t attend, my troop went on a training exercise south of the North Downs and somebody “borrowed” my vehicle as...

    What I have fixed today

I finally got around to doing a couple of jobs that have been outstanding for a while. Replaced a couple of GU10 halogen bulbs in some downlighters with GU10 LED bulbs. I held off doing these because I couldn’t figure out how to release them from the light fittings but, on looking closely, they...

Things have moved on in the last 8 years and KISS

Going back to the subject of combi ovens, we’ve had a Panasonic NN CF873 for quite a number of years which replaced an earlier version that we must have originally bought over 25 years ago. For cooking for two people, it works well as a grill, fan oven, microwave or any combination of these –...
