• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

What to do with Off Cuts?

I had a blitz on small, offcut boxes a few years ago and made fifteen or so Cosmanesque offerings (secret, 'invisible' wooden hinge) which I took up to Wessex Rehab at our district hospital in town. I also glued into each one a bit of heritage oak (approx 1840) from the bell towers of St.Paul's...

The Niff-Naff Cabinet; back panel rebate

The back panel went into the AirPress vacuum bag at 8am this morning and wasn't retrieved until after coffee at 11.30. It came out, as they always do, looking like the proverbial 'dogs dinner': ....and worse, had taken on a distinct and unwelcome bow, clearly seen above! I clamped it down...

The Niff-Naff Cabinet; back panel rebate

I suppose in a way they are burnished Ian. What I actually did was to put the countersink cutter into the pillar drill chuck and then bring it down as far as it would go and no further. Then I positioned the job on the table and raised it so that a small chamfer was cut, but the cutter...

There's going to be six 4 or 5mm Bubinga shelves Andy (already cut) which gives SWIMBO plenty of room for all her nick-nacks, but they're all of varying sizes, so she's got plenty of different options for arranging the distance between the shelves. You're telling me it was risky! I had to...

The Niff-Naff Cabinet; back panel rebate

Much to my surprise, the 'ad hoc' router jig for use on the ci table: ...worked an absolute treat! I had to think about it a lot before I attempted this little operation as it's not something to recommend, nor was I sure it would work; if it went tu, the job would have been only fit for the...

The Niff-Naff Cabinet; back panel rebate

I noticed once the glue up had been done n'dusted that I'd left a mere mm or so: ...between the edge of the hinge and the side of the cabinet (arrowed) which is a little too close for comfort, bearing in mind that there has to be a bit of clearance 'twixt the door and the side. To that end, I...

Planing off the 0.5mm end grain bit of waste on the shovetails ain't easy, so I've had to adapt a bit of 'blue sky thinking'. End grain tails are done first: ...and then pins are done in a similar way. The fat end of the side has a slightly different approach: ...once the pins have been...

The 'glue up' happened this morning and was achieved without any ghastly miscalculations. All the 'stuff' was gathered and I decided to use the 30 minute version of Z-Poxy from Axminster: A smear was spread on tails and sockets, the idea being that the glue would act as a lubricant before it...

What to do with Off Cuts?

Bigger off cuts go to my next door neighbour for his log burner but the rest get collected by the bin men, which includes clippings from the P/T. No idea what happens to them, whether it's land fill or incinerator. I keep a lot of different sizes of offcuts, most of which gradually get used...

Potential Stars Waiting To be Born.

I'm the opposite; I've always liked watches as have my brothers. When the opportunity arose some years ago to buy a Rolex Submariner, I splurged out and it's now worth approx twice what I paid for it. The huge downside of these things is that you're advised to get them regularly serviced...

    Nervous about Surgeon

As far as I can see, you're the patient and it's your body; you're entitled to every single bit of relevant information that the surgeon has. For him not to divulge the information seems totally unprofessional and very strange. When I had my prostate op ten years ago, the team I was dealing...

    David Hockney RIP

Years ago SWIMBO and I were in a gallery and she nearly bought a Hockney original daub; just three brush strokes on canvas. I only found out recently that she didn't - Rob

That is a thing of beauty Frank and far better than my doll's house, which, as mentioned elsewhere was never loved or even played with....such are daughters, but at that time she'd already started to become a voracious reader and still has five or six books on the go at the same time. She's now...

As luck would have it, I found by chance an ebony door closer which is exactly what I need: ...so this is now sitting, along with a brass screw and spring in a 'baccy tin in the bench tool well: Once the 'fix' had been cleaned up and the piece planed back to size, I rigged up a stop on the...

The Niff-Naff Cabinet; back panel rebate

Thanks Frank, I can sort out with SWIMBO a suitable date in August for both a visit to your good self and thence onto Yandles. The max I can re-saw on my big Ax bandsaw is 350mm (that's with a new blade) but the most I've ever done thus far is 300mmish. A DM with photos would be excellent with...

Please accept profuse apologies for not getting back to you. I'm still pondering about materials but a another jewellery box has definitely been pencilled into the Projects Book and if it's in there, it will get made. I'll be spending a considerable amount of wonga in August at Yandles...

I went out the 'shop fully intending to have a nice, peaceful 'sesh' by machining out the various recesses needed, so first up was the 5mm deep slot for the JK style door closer. The router depth was set to the aforementioned 5mm with gauge blocks: ...and the job cramped to the bench with...

    Project Merlin

I made one for my daughter about the same time...top quality 6mm Birch ply throughout. She never touched it and was totally bored by the very concept of dolls. I recollect at the time there was a really excellent dolls house shop in the city centre; alas now gone years ago - Rob
