• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Holdfast holes - is there really much science behind palcement?

Agreed Steve. I'd also add that MDF of any denomination is probably too soft so continued use by a big lumpy iron holdfast in the holes is liable to distort or damage them. Better I fancy in a thick (as you say) hardwood bench top. I have no experience of these bad boys having always used a...

If there was one hand tool which you would like to see made again.

I once had the pleasure of using St. David of Charlesworth's Stanley 5.5 jack which was unbelievably good as he'd spent hours and hours to tune it 'just a bit'. Most so called 'tuned' planes of whatever denomination are better than standard and it's worth spending some time on them, but...

    Tack Hammers

They're watchmaker's hammers. For a job in a confined space even a standard, common or garden pin hammer (Warrington pattern) is just too unwieldy for driving veneer pins. As I mentioned, if a slightly smaller pilot hole is drilled in the glazing bar, a very lightweight hammer will easily...

    Tack Hammers

That works as well Ian. I've also found that drilling a teeny tiny pilot hole in the glazing bar (with a Dremel) that's slightly smaller than the dia of the pin makes tapping them in far less fraught, but as the pins are so small needle nosed pliers (or instrument pliers) is the way forward - Rob

    Tack Hammers

I need to get a very small hammer like this for nailing veneer pins which I use on the glazing bars of cabinets. Even the smallest hammer I've currently got in the 'shop is way too clunky - Rob

    Ash trees...Good News!

On the last section on the Ch4 News, the presenter (Alex Thompson) mentioned that the technique could be done at home and implied that we should be encouraged to have a go, so my guess is that the aforementioned recipe for seed germination ought to be readily available somewhere - Rob

    Ash trees...Good News!

According to Ch4 news this evening, there's been a breakthrough. Boffins have been able to germinate and grow hundreds of ash 'die back' resistant seedlings in a week or so; I didn't fully understand what they'd done or how but it seemed pretty impressive...also that the technique could be done...

    Woodie Plane Re-furb

That's the cap iron that came with the plane; not guilty as to fiddling around with the screw position :ROFLMAO: - Rob

    Woodie Plane Re-furb

Thanks Andy, this is a shot of the blades edge on edge: ...and the Marples blade defo seems to be thinner by a margin. I've started to prep it properly and have begun by getting the back reasonably flat at the front edge on the Kanaban lapping plate (very 'icky' btw) - Rob

    Woodie Plane Re-furb

Interesting! Looking at the blades side by side: ...the beaten up old Marples blade (arrowed) appears to be slightly more parallel in it's thickness than my replacement tapered blade, which is definitely thicker at the cutting edge (as you can just make out from the pic). I gave the...

    Woodie Plane Re-furb

Fortunately the old, original cutter that came with the plane (badly nicked on the edge) was reasonably close to the top a very large, very full, very heavy crate with all the excess stuff from the workshop. It's got a shamrock brand and I can just about make out the 'Marples' name, so I guess...

    Woodie Plane Re-furb

I've spent a relatively long time trying to sort this one out to make it cut properly. It looks respectable now: ....but there seems to be something fundamentally wrong with the geometry of the cutter and chipbreaker. The replacement blade was slightly hollow so that got sorted out on my...

    Woodie Plane Re-furb

That's true, but if a plane is taken to the sides, all or most of it's past 'life' is going to be removed. My object was to clean the 100+ years of accumulated gunk off the wood, but still leave all the dings n'dents to show that it had a life, albeit some time ago. That said, it's the bottom...

    Bedside Table

Very nice table @AndyT and as I remember it! @Dr.Al requested suggestions as to design ideas, but what I do is to scan Pinterest for inspiration, bearing in mind that there's nothing new in woodwork design that hasn't be thought about decades or even centuries ago. F'example, this is the...

    Bedside Table

If that's the one that's in the dining room where we had lunch a few years ago, it's very a very elegant bit of work and I think I commented so at the time. A pic(s) of that piece wouldn't come amis Andy? Basically a good, if simple design Al but I think by now you're more than capable of a bit...
