• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Yew... your thoughts before possibility of offering for sale?

Lets say, for example, a max size of 35 x 30 x 15cm high, finished. That would fit comfortably on the top of that cabinet, so front and back would be say, 35 x 15cm, sides would be 30 x 15cm and top/bottom would be 35 x30cm (which could be veneered) - Rob

Yew... your thoughts before possibility of offering for sale?

I'd be interested to know what sort of jewellery box sized bits of Yew you have lurking in your 'shop, bearing in mind that what I intend to make won't be a tiddler and will be bigger: ...than her current one in Koa - Rob

Yew... your thoughts before possibility of offering for sale?

Lovely timber as you mention, but the eternal problem with Yew is that it splits and cracks, so for the sort of work I do there would probably be a huge amount of waste (even though that could be made into smaller projects such as boxes etc) - Rob....who has been 'requested' to make a new...

    Cutting disks

If it's mild steel, an ordinary hacksaw with a new blade will go through that stuff like a knife through beurre - Rob

Using UK credit cards in France

We always picked 'local currency' and were charged in Japanese Yen: 7-11 ATM's are considered to be the best place to get yer dosh. Likewise, anything we paid for on a CC was always in JPY - Rob

Post a photo of the last thing you made...

Walnut stand for a circular antique Japanese netsuke: Front and: ...rear. This one's an unsigned Edo period (250-300 years old) 'water dragon' carved in walrus ivory, one of my favourites. It's completely hollow! - Rob...dragons are cool, or hot. Whatever.....only six stands to go

    Good stuff!

Thanks chaps, the endorsement is very much appreciated. What I've done is to cut off the nozzle (I bought three tubes so have got another couple) once I used it, with some CT1 remaining in the nozzle. This forms a sort of 'cap' which I can then screw back onto the tube: Between the 'cap'...

    Good stuff!

I had small but irritating leak in the 'shop which let in the wet when the 'typhoons' blew in the Autumn last year. It's been sealed with silicone for the last 20+ years which isn't ideal, so I tried some CTI clear adhesive/sealer today (after having cleared out all the suspect old sealant)...

    Coaster holder

A coaster holder thingie is in my 'umble opinion, quite a tricky thing to make as the internal shape needs to be flat, with a 90deg corner, plus there's the access slot. I've done one and it took a greater time than I thought it might - Rob

    American Ash

Agreed! Kiln dried American Ash looks great but is pretty horrible stuff to work with. Air dried, home grown timber is far more pleasant - Rob

    VCarving for the fist time

It is possible to do it 'by hand', but it would be very, very difficult - Rob

Like the ocean under the moon

As I've got a few VacuVin stoppers surplus to requirements, I'll try the wine bottle approach first of all. The Stop Loss bags look intriguing though, but does each come with that stand up blue plastic base thingie as shown in the pics? - Rob

    Square of Thales

This is my SofT: ....together with another very 'handy' widget which appears to be a Golden Ratio gauge, again which I've never used...but ought to. It was sent to me by somebody a long time ago from a galaxy far far away - Rob

    White “Faskut” saw

Here's me thinking (before I opened the thread) that it was a new brand of Japanese pull saw:ROFLMAO:..... - Rob

    Printing

We've got the Epson ET-2850 which is the version that'll do double sided printing. Thus far it's been a fantastic bit of kit, the only grumble being that the set up screen is a shade over 25mm square; apart from that wunderbar - Rob

    Square of Thales

Same here. Interesting bit of kit but I've never yet used mine - Rob

    hacked debit card

Any emails like that looking vaguely suspicious just get deleted before they're even opened, working on the principal that if it's really genuine and important they'll get back to us. Never happens - Rob
