• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Sherwood Die Stock

Hello everyone, I'm looking to buy a Sherwood 3/4 inch UNC die and die stock from Cromwell Tools. Only problem is, I don't know what size die stock I need to buy to match with the 3/4 inch UNC die. It's definitely either 1.5 or 2 inches, but not sure which. I rang Cromwell Tools and they...

    Drawknives

Hello everyone, I'm thinking of getting a drawknife, any suggestions on the best type to get? The widest piece of timber I'll be using it on will be about 10 inches wide. Is it best to stick to current makes or is it worth getting a vintage one off eBay, I've seen some I Sorby makes and W C...

    Wood fungi

These mushroom sort of things were on some of the oak I bought for my trading wherry build, does anyone know what they are and if there is any cause for concern? I confess there is a gap in my timber knowledge concerning fungi. The sapwood below the bark was very dry and brittle, easy to break...

    Marine fastenings

Hello everyone, As many of you know, I'm building the 48-foot sailing wherry Lady Garnet. I'm getting very close to laying the keel, and I urgently need to decide what I'm going to do for fastenings. There seem to be quite a few options, and I hear various pros and cons, so if anyone could...

    Raw vs boiled linseed oil

Hello everyone, Don here from Building Lady Garnet. The oak I have bought for the keel, hog, etc, is all green, so in order to minimise cracks as it dries, I thought I'd apply some linseed oil to the timber, to slow down the drying. But I'm unsure if it's best to use raw or boiled? When I...

    Trading Wherry 'Lady Garnet'

I've probably been remiss in not sharing this project earlier, although it's been discussed a few times in various threads! I'm building a 48-foot trading wherry, a traditional wooden cargo-carrying sailing vessel, once a common sight on the Norfolk Broads. Lady Garnet will be clinker-planked in...

    Woodworm

Hello again! While inspecting one of the oak boards I've purchased, I found that there a quite a few holes in the timber (DeWalt battery for scale). Now then, what should I do about this? I was hoping to use this for external boat planking. Thanks.

    Splits in oak

Hello all, I've recently bought a lot (and I mean a lot) of oak planking, cut through-and-through from the round. I've been busily cutting off the bark and most of the sapwood, and removing the cracks around the pith, which has had a fair amount of wet rot in the cracks. I've come to the next...

    Sailing/rowing dinghy project

Hello everyone, new member here. I will shortly be building a large boat (48 foot clinker planked), and will happily post photos of the process, but in the meantime, here's some work on a nine-foot dinghy I've been building, sort of as a "warm-up" project (and this will also be the tender for...

    Vintage tool collection - dating

Hello everyone, new member here. I just bought a large collection of vintage woodworking tools, and I'm trying to get rough dates for when the tools are from. I've done a lot of internet research, and found dates for some, but there are still quite a few which have me stumped! Some notes below...
