• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Anyone used a drop down threshold seal on exterior door?

It mortises into the door bottom and is hidden. Can't seem to find info about suitability for external exposed door. I have some doubts about a mechanical movement functioning well over time. Something like this...

    Cutting brass door knob

I've noticed that there are many very skilled metal workers on here so forgive this question as I have next to no metal working experience. I bought these door knobs for a job I'm currently working on. These are for a rim lock. I assumed that when the rose was removed the door knob would sit...

    Fast worker

I was up a ladder sorting out guttering and downpipies that an apprentice roofer botched causing the high capacity gutters that I installed to keep filling and overflowing. The culprit was several screws through the joins in the downpipe sections. Secure joins was about the only plus point...

    St Dubricius church, Porlock

Wonderful that they've secured funding. Apparently quite unusual oak shingled spire but couldn't find it in Cecil Hewett's English historic carpentry. I wonder is the unusual status beyond the truncated appearance which might have been old damage not previously fixed...

    Seals for sliding sashes

Is there a decent guide anywhere for what sort of seals to use in the various different parts of a sliding sash. I'll be making at least 3 of these hopefully soon and might do a WIP. Nearing the end of a door build but having to wait for a few things before I can completely finish it and in the...

Hanging a door. Some finer points

I've hung a few doors in the past including double doors and as it's usually gone well I haven't given it much thought. However in thinking about getting ready to hang another door I thought I'd check Ellis' modern practical joinery and now I'm stuck trying to figure out a few details. Ellis...

    Escutcheon insert? Supplier

I think the picture shows an escutcheon insert but I'm not sure if that's the correct term. Does anyone have a recommended supplier in the UK for such a thing? This is from a dressing table but I would like one suitably larger sized for a door key. The other side will have a surface rim lock. I...

    Brass? Lacquer? Horrible letterbox

I recently spent quite a bit of time restoring a front door and as part of this removed and cleaned the brass. I assume the door and most of the brass are the same age as the house, so approaching 100 years. The pieces are nice EXCEPT for the letterbox which is a recent cheap gharish addition...

    Musée des Arts Décoratifs

Reading @Windows post about art Nouveau brass escutcheons reminded me of a trip to Musée des Arts Décoratifs, probably my favourite museum in Paris. It's adjacent to the Louvre. There's a section on furniture from different periods and countries and it's hugely inspiring. I had a look through...

Curved or arched rebate with hand tools

I am in the process of making the top rail of a door that needs a rebate cut for glass. The trick is that it is arched and therefore needs an curved/arched rebate. I don't have a powered router but I realise this would be this quickest and simplist way. Any tips on how to do this with hand...

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

In the process of making a diminshed stile door and learning along the way so this one unlikely to be a quick build. Is being made from oak and will be approx 920 x 2040 mm so will be a beast to lift and not looking forward to moving it into place whenever that will be. So amongst other things...

Finally getting around to saying hello

Hello all, what a great resource this is. I'm an enthusiastic hobbyist sometimes biting off more than I can chew but (usually) enjoy the process as much as the finished article. Found this site when searching around for tips on making a diminished stile door. This particular issue is part of a...

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

Hello. I'm making a diminished stile door in well seasoned oak. This is being made almost entirely with handtools. The only machine I use is a bandsaw for ripping large stock. So the issue is, does anyone have practical experience and advice (and hopefully photos) for: 1. marking out the...
