• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Carrying plasterboard

Morning all, Longtime no post, sorry been pretty hectic undoing a load of “work” my builder had done and redoing it in a way that the roof doesn’t catastrophically leak. I need to re fit an insulated plasterboard ceiling, I have a plasterboard lift to get each sheet up to the joists but I am...

    Shed Permitted Development Rights

Anyone know if these have changed? My friend has asked for some help to build a large shed in their field and I have read these rules for domestic sheds: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5d77afc8e5274a27cdb2c9e9/190910_Tech_Guide_for_publishing.pdf#page41 Technically the field...

    Acetone

Needed some acetone to clean off a grp roof I am redoing. Bought a kit to do the roof that included “everything” needed for 10m2 but when it arrived it did not include the acetone which the company sold but to get it would be £31 delivery. Been all over Salisbury looking for some at builders...

    Anyone seen lead do this?

Another leaking roof, this time flat lead roof over the bay window at the front. Went up yesterday and couldn’t see how the water was getting in. Up today and used as scrubbing brush up discover the lead has “dissolved” leaving holes: I’ve filled them with CT1 for now but will have to get...

    Flat roof

So this is linked to my post about removing snapped off taps from a steel I beam. I have a GRP roof that is leaking in a few places. I have patched as best I can for now so the work to resolve this will be in the spring. There are too many penetrations in the roof to facilitate it being a roof...

Removing a broken tap from a bolt hole

Had to remove the glass balustrade from the roof terrace because there was a leak. Utterly dreadful installation and I have temporarily patched it until the better weather next year when I will repair the roof and reinstall the balustrade myself (got quoted £12k to remove balustrade, repair...

    Thicknesser not parallell

Good morning all, I have a metabo hc260 planer thicknesser and last week the thicknesser bed suddenly stopped going up and down when the drive handle was turned. Height is controlled by 4 threaded posts, one at each corner, connected by a chain so they all turn when post one is turned. I...

    Commercial sink waste trap

I bought a second hand stainless steel commercial sink and am having a bit of trouble plumbing it in. The plug outlet doesn’t seem to match anything I can find online. The outlet measures 46.5mm across (green arrow). I thought it must be a commercial 50mm fitting but the one I just tried to...

    Telescopes

Does anyone know anything about telescopes for the hobbyist? I want to show my daughter some more details of the moon and planets when they are visible without spending a huge amount. We have been using https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/night/uk/london to identify them in the sky with the...

    Rebuilding a 1960s O level woodwork project

My dad made this little cupboard for his o level woodwork back in the 1960s, the glue failed on the front maybe 20 years ago and it remained in pieces at their house until recently. Dad passed away in 2019 and my mum sold the farm. Recently she asked if I could reassemble this for the...

Attaching posts to table (Christmas decorations)

Good morning all, I have to decorate a table at a work Christmas lunch tomorrow (part of a competition) and we plan to string some battery fairy lights up over the table and need to secure a pole to each corner of the table. I bought some massive cable ties for the job but when i went to check...

    Plywood delivered

Has anyone had much luck with getting plywood delivered? I’ve got some carcasses and shelving to make up but no longer have the means to go and collect (and check the quality!). The prices for birch ply are terrifying so a lesser quality would be acceptable but it’s so hit and miss. Had some...

    Woodworm

I have had some Beech slabs from a tree we cut down in our garden drying for the last three and a half years. I have just moved them inside to get used to the heating and humidity in the spot the will ultimately end up as the seat to a bench storage unit in our hall. As I moved them I noticed...

    Rusty black marks in wood

Anyone got any tips to get the black marks off the wood? I bought a desk for my daughter to do her homework and drawing on but at £20 on eBay it does require some work (I had to evict two snails and a spider!)

    Warped wooden window

I am currently trying to improve the insulation in the house, such as addressing the badly installed loft insulation and am also trying to sort any draughts too before winter truly arrives. One of our wooden casement windows appears to have warped slightly and so, in the bottom corner, no longer...

Housewarming gift- end grain chopping board

My friend is building a house and on a recent visit he had been fitting the kitchen. He’s had some oak engineered worktops fitted. There were some off cuts so I said I would take one and make it into a chopping board for them as a house warming gift. It’s nothing special but they liked the...

    filler or caulk type substance

I need to fill some slight gaps and some very small holes in some oak before it is finished. I plan to use Danish oil but i don't want the gap filling concoction to suddenly stand out. Does anyone have any suggestions? Its the upstand behind an oak kitchen work top and the wall so if it was...

    Screen repair

I’ve got an older iPhone that has a cracked screen. I’ve never had to get one repaired so does anyone have any recommendations? I don’t mind sending it off if it’s a reputable company for example I see Timpsons do a screen replacement for £45. Thanks in advance. Edit: I have had one repaired...

    The garden path

As ever I’m after some advice! Got a path down the side of the house that is our only external access to the back. It’s quite steep and currently made from compacted scalpings with a layer of Cotswold stone chippings. It looks quite rough; north facing and sheltered so green and mucky. It also...
