• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Lie Nielsen No. 60 1/2 Block Plane

I've always fancied a Lie Nielsen No. 60 1/2 Block Plane but I've never brought myself to actually buy one, they're around £200 now, I should've bought one when Axminster were selling them for £100 a few years ago! I occasionally look on eBay in the hopes of finding an excellent deal, but as yet...

    Imgur Blocking UK Users

This isn't really an issue that can be sorted by the forum itself, but more to let people know. It appears that it's not possible to view Imgur photos from the UK anymore, unless it's a temporary problem, but more than likely it's happened as a result of the new Online Safety Act and the UK...

    Apprenticeships

There's been a lot of rhetoric from the current government lately regarding apprenticeships and the construction industry, and how they are going to introduce 120,000 extra apprenticeships across all sectors, force home builders to build homes to schedules with penalties if they don't complete...

    Wadkin MMT Cutterblock Setting Stand

After a long time of searching I finally managed to find a cutterblock setting stand. It’s a late Wadkin “MMT” setting stand for use with their planer moulders, though this is the first one that I’ve ever come across. It’s smaller and significantly lighter than the earlier Wadkin “FDT”...

    Artificial Intelligence

I still find artificial intelligence very strange, recently a Microsoft update added "Co-pilot" to my PC and I thought I'd try it out by asking "Who is Roy Sutton Woodworker?" This was the answer: It took about 20 seconds to come up with all that. What's obviously clear is some of this is...

    Spindle Moulder Cutter Grinding

Since we've got this new forum software, I can now link my Instagram videos onto the forum. This is one I did last week grinding up some cutters for replicating a bespoke architrave profile that you might enjoy.

    First Swallow Spotting

Spotted first pair of swallows of the year today, about 10 days earlier than you usually see them here, I wonder if they were carried over quicker by the storm.

    Famine Chair

Famine Chairs are a style of country chair most commonly found in Ireland and come from the period of the Great Famine of the middle of the 19th century. They are also known as Hedge chairs, but the reason for the name from what I can read isn't entirely clear with many different opinions, one...

    Fine Ripper

Once again a hand saw was calling to me on eBay... I thought you might like to see it get cleaned up. "Kangaroo Trademark" makes it a Robert Sorby, but not sure of the age as they used this brand for a very long time. Owned by an "A. Ramsay" and later or maybe perhaps earlier a "W.R" who...

    Big Ripper

A bit of a departure from my usual trademark of Wood Machining, I bought a hand tool. More specifically this old hand saw I spotted on eBay that I liked the look of. It has a blade length of 28", very long by modern standards. What fascinated me more was the progressive pitch of the teeth...

    Handsaw Identification

I saw this saw on eBay and I was wondering if anyone could identify the brand, looks like a smiling sun on the etching?

    Ken Hawley Interview

I'd not seen these videos interviewing Ken Hawley before, very interesting to watch and I thought some here might like to watch them if they hadn't seen them already. A man with incredible foresight to appreciate and document the many trades of Sheffield before they disappeared forever...

    Startrite 352 Dust Collection

As some know, I've been sort of half working on rebuilding a Startrite 352 bandsaw, and a right dog of one at that but that's a story for another time. Whilst I'm working on it, I'm thinking about how best to incorporate dust collection into the machine as these typically did not come with any...

Why are Britain’s new houses so rubbish?

Just read this in the Grauniad, well worth a read about the dire state of affairs of new houses in Britain. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/oct/21/cracked-tiles-wonky-gutters-leaning-walls-why-are-britains-new-houses-so-rubbish?utm_source=pocket-newtab-en-gb This is a...

    Training, Apprenticeships, and Other Musings

Back in 2021, we had a very healthy workload and we could justify taking on an apprentice, we weren't actively seeking one but you have one or two people come through the door a year asking about it, usually parents. One came through the door around August time asking and it was a case of asking...

    Sedgwick GW Spindle Moulder Restoration

6th of March 2021, I bought a Sedgwick GW Spindle Moulder from a friend for £300 that requires quite a lot of TLC to get back to a "good" machine. The GW is an interesting machine, from what I understand it's the first model that Sedgwick produced prior to the later SM3 and SM4 (3HP and 4HP...

    Vintage Carpentry and Joinery Books

I decided to spare a little time and write up a list of my collection of old Carpentry and Joinery books as a companion to my "Vintage Wood Machining Books" thread. Obviously, the collection of Carpentry and Joinery books spans a far wider range of work as well as time periods than the Wood...

A Lesson in Cataloguing Your Parts

I've been rebuilding a Europa 340 power feeder unit for a while now intermittently and I had totally rebuilt the gubbins, new bearings, new wheel cover, changed the gearing ratio to facilitate a slower feed speed, and I'd even painted it all! In all I've probably spent £80 in parts, let alone...

    Nancy Hiller

She passed away this morning. Some here might have known of her as an accomplished woodworking author, more well known in the states and among the "Lost Art Press" gang. https://blog.lostartpress.com/2022/08/29/nancy-hiller-1959-2022/

A Camera and Little Knowledge Can Be a Dangerous Thing

I seem to be getting recommended more Woodworking videos on Youtube than I used to, must be a change in the algorithm or something. I was recommended this video from a fairly new content creator about how dangerous the table saw is and I'm a fool for click-bait titles, it's nice to see someone...
