• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Truffles

This might amuse you Adrian. I know you are fond of your truffles. 1890s cook book, but most internal reference is a decade or two earlier. How about this for your discerning guests: My emphasis. À l’Enfant Prodigue.—Get a couple of lobsters, and cut them down the back, leaving the shell of...

    A Cautionary Tale

This may seem to be very specific advice, but I’m sure it is universal (please tell me it is…) Don’t drive down to your Borders bolt hole, looking forward to two weeks isolation and relaxation. Unload all the goodies. And realise you have left all (yes, all) your partner’s presents back...

    A Plane

When I was in the Faroes, in the Tjóðsavnið there were a few tools relating to boat building (faroese fishing boats - 4 to 12 oars, one or two mini masts, double prowed). And I came across this (rubbish photo'. Through glass, and I can see the reason, but sometimes they take the low lighting...

    Faroese Carvings

Some may be interested in these. 1400's from a church, Ólavskirkjan in Kirkjubøur. Number of other photo', including some of a seyðurslaktir (sp.? Faroese is incomprehensible), which I might need to run by the mods. Not suitable for veggies, or sensitive souls.

    Trim: re Topley

Don’t want to mess up Mike’s thread. Tiresias wrote:Oh, yes, Don Topley mentioned you the other day on the radio. Your fame spreads far and wide. First time I’d ever heard this name was in this thread, then I just pick up my phone to see this notification… Quick Google suggests Reece is...

    Faroes

Ok, this was a bit of a googly. My partner is taking me to the Faroes for my birthday. Two reasons: Ancestral connection (you can’t make a Scottish/Irish drinking and fighting machine without a dash of Scandi – I have couple of leads to follow. Probably boring church scouring). And I...

    Calcutta Cup

    Mmmm. Well. Great match.

The barbarians are at the gates

I walked out with the hound at 8 this morning. New Town. Someone had gone down the street, carefully scraping ‘F**k the rich’ on the ice on the windscreens of each car. Oh dear. Still at least they could spell, write and construct what might be, arguably, be called a sentence. The...

    Stopped chamfers

I’m trying to do some stopped chamfers on an oxford frame. It is oak. Half lap joints, so far so good., all done. But the detailing… I have been practicing on some fairly woeful pine. I want a c. 6mm chamfer with 45 degree ends. My first go. Not satisfactory. Ok when you are with the...

    Moral/ethical/practical question

Hmmm. This is a tricky one. The young hound has just been found to have a significant tumour in her bladder. I say young, the bitch is about 12 and a bit. If it is confirmed (Dick Vet visit to come, ultrasound or MRI) the prognosis isn’t good. Six months if you leave it and 12 to 18...

You wait all day for a marking gauge thread...

Well, if people are going to do marking gauge threads… This is so as not to derail Dr Al’s or Mike G’s threads. And to be honest I can’t remember whether I have posted this before. But I use this: It’s made from an old sycamore fire wood log, some fruit wood for the blade wedge, and...

    Ancestors' names

This is purely because it amuses me. My father has been going back through the family bibles for our ancestry. Patrilineal side fine: Richard, John, Henry, Henry, Caleb (outlier), Norman and then my father. But on the matrilineal side I have a Marmeduke and a Theophilus. In the late...

    British craftsmanship at its best

Well, here’s a thing. Dishwasher lunched itself on Christmas Eve. Not a big difficulty, only the two of us (and the wonderhound). We’re using all the silver and crystal, so it is predominantly hand wash any way. So. I took the dishwasher out today in preparation for a new one. I find...

    Clutch Pencil/Lead Holder Opinions

Ah, that wonderful time of year again. My father has asked for a mechanical pencil for Christmas. He was vague (a lifetime of being an academic and then managing a substantial proportion of the Civil Service has left him unable to say anything without qualification and tergiversation –...

    Corner dowels/pins in Oxford Frames

I’m making an Oxford frame. Or trying to. Joints no problem (or at least I know the theory, ability may lag some way behind.) Some I have seen have what look to be square faceted dowels pinning the corners. I rather like that. Is the best way of doing these making and inserting/gluing the...

    Kräftskiva

This may be an odd one, but I know there are a few Scandis and foodies on here. We’ve got 2 kilos (frozen, I admit) of these waiting for a sunny day. Should be the first Wednesday in August, but that was a rubbish day. That’s from our house in Tyresö a year or two ago (actually more...

    60s/70s Hi Fi

As a further episode of clearing objects from my partner’s father’s house I now have some 70s HiFi. Some of you I know are very knowledgeable on these things. To wit: Wharfdale Glendale Tuner Amplifier. Works as a receiver for R3, at least. Signal strength dial may be duff, but it ain’t...

    AVOMeters

An entertaining (actually, no, depressing) few days spent cleaning out my partner’s father’s house. How many amp/volt meters do you think you need? So far we have 2 AVOmeters. Two Sangamos of a similar era/size. And the behemoth. Weighs about 12 kilos. Much of which is the case...

    Caliper nomenclature

Just came across these and cleaned them up. I have never seen this design (not that my experience is exhaustive) - there is a scale on the top section that translates into the gap between the points - put it at 1 on the top scale, and the points are 1cm apart. Not very clear in the first...
