• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Hard, hard Jarrah

I have worked with Jarrah for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is in a sense the most famous of West Australian timbers, growing in a small area south of Perth, and no where else in the world. Secondly, it has potentially beautiful figure and colour, and can create stunning furniture. Lastly, it...

    The power of tusk tenons

I would like to utilise the tools in the travel tool box in my workshop, as well as take the tool box along for joinery demonstrations at my woodwork club. The problem is that the tool box takes up too much real estate on the work bench ... not just the tool box, itself, but when storage boxes...

Fantasy Tool Box - last post

The travel tool box is complete. Ready - when the time comes - to be fitted inside a hard case when the time comes to fly to New Zealand. Total weight is 16Kg (40lbs). Dimensions: 540mm long x 280mm deep x 210mm high. The final part of the build was to add a carry handle. Earlier, I was...

Fantasy Tool Box - rasps in a corner

A tool kit would be incomplete without awls and files to shape curves and detail. I have several handmade Auriou rasps and rifflers as well as a range of smooth cut files for use in the woodshop. The Auriou are fantastic. Mine are about 20 years old and, although some have noticeable wear, they...

Fantasy Tool Box - the last box, plus more ...

There are two boxes at the bottom of the chest ... The one on the left contains the moving fillester/shoulder plane, which was posted some weeks ago ... The one on the right has not yet been opened. A digital vernier caliper is on the tool list and I have a spare Mitutoyo available...

Fantasy Tool Box - the last plane

Trying plane ... smoother .. cooper plane .. moving fillister/shoulder plane .. plough plane .. side rebate/sliding dovetail plane .. router plane ... the last plane is a block plane. This plane is made with scraps of Beech, with a shop made M2 (HSS) blade, UHMW cross piece, and Jarrah...

Fantasy Tool Box - coopering plane

One more plane added to the tool box over the weekend, joining the trying plane and smoother ... 200mm (8") long x 50mm (2") wide x 50mm (2") high From this angle, this plane looks like any other smoother. It just is not. What is the purpose of this plane? The cabinet to be built has a...

Fantasy Tool Box - Combo Moving Fillister Shoulder Plane Retake

The first version of the Combo Moving Fillister Shoulder Plane worked but it was clunky and I decided to remake it from scratch. The new version is all the first should have been. I am very pleased with it and perhaps the details here will help others to build their own. The aim was to combine...

Fantasy Tool Box - Trying Plane

The wood school I shall attend next year recommends a Stanley #6 as a short jointer. This is 18" in length and takes a blade 2 3/8" wide. And weighs 4 kg - far, far too much for the total 18 kg limit I have imposed for a tool box filled with every tool one might need to build any piece of...

Fantasy Tool Box - the smoother

It's a dozen years since I last made a Krenov smoother, which is the subject of this post. I decided on a Krenov style as it offered more control over the important weight factor. It is possible to choose the components to suit, and keeping weight down is critical with travel in mind. The...

    Shoulder/Moving Fillister Plane Rebuild

This plane has given me the fits. I made a new blade for it, using M2, to replace the Stanley #93 cut down that was doing duty. It turned out well (top blade) ... ... but initially the damn plane would no longer cut! What is going on? I re-sharpened it. It could shave hair, slice through...

Fantasy Tool Box - one more saw to fit

This is the current inside of the tool box lid. It contains a 10" dovetail saw, a 10" crosscut joinery saw, a small, very fine toothed 6" dozuki , and a 5" fretsaw... A saw which I frequently turn to for dados and sliding dovetails, especially stopped versions, is a Japanese azebiki. It...

    Fantasy Tool Box - spokeshave

A spokeshave is an essential part of a tool kit. I use them quite a good bit, for curved parts of chairs and table legs. There were a few considerations when building one: Firstly, it needed to be compact and light, as with all the other tools included in the tool box. For example, my HNT...

Fantasy Tool Box - combination shoulder plane and moving fillister

Two planes used in all furniture builds are a shoulder plane and a moving fillister. My go to in my workshop is a Veritas Skew Rabbet Plane and either the Small or Medium Shoulder Plane ... The Skew Rabbet Plane (rebate plane) is the more important of the two, and used - strangely enough -...

    Fantasy Tool Box - sharpening

Of course one cannot take tools in a travel tool box and not have a way of sharpening them. My preference in my workshop is to freehand sharpen on ceramic waterstones, for example, Shapton or Sigma stones. The issue here is that they are heavy, both individually and collectively. Every oz and...

Fantasy Tool Box - one last puzzle box

This was to be a box for two marking gauges, but I managed to squeeze in another tool ... which is great since I was not sure if there was going to be space enough in the tool box for it. A little packed ... as a puzzle box should be :) First out is this wheel cutting gauge. It uses a...

Fantasy Tool Box - a box in a box

One more box finished. This goes in the lower section of the tool box ... Opening it up reveals ... A Record #043 with fence and blades, and two other objects, one a small dovetailed box ... This is 2" long x 1" wide. Inside are blades for a marking knife, a lead sharpener, and a...

Fantasy Tool Box - Tuning the Record #043

One of the tools for the Tool Box is the Record #043 plough plane. This is a gem of a plane - small enough not to take up too much space, and it fights above its weight. I have the Veritas Small Plow and Combination planes, but they are too large and heavy to include in this tool box. Veritas...

A Tea Tray and its dovetails

A week ago my wife asked to build a tea tray. Something on the smaller side. At the same time, I agreed to do a dovetailing demonstration for my woodworking club. So I was thinking about construction of the tea tray, and whether it was possible to kill two birds with one stone, that is, was...

Fantasy Tool Box - part 2

I was tempted to title this episode, "Another Brick in the Wall", but someone else has already used it . Actually, the time spent feels substantial even though it is less than one might imagine. Firstly, I removed the wooden hinges at the rear of the Pine and Makore tool box. My fear was that...
