• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Look after yourselves chaps!!

Sometimes it is not even what you did or how you have been treated that causes you to feel like so bad you feel you can't continue. It can happen just because of things around you (*). In any case, there is no shame in looking for support. As a matter of fact, I would see it as a sign of...

    Quince

I need to look up membrillo. Never heard of it before. Thanks for the suggestion. I usually make some dishes with potato and beef in the oven with it. And I have a great recipe for quince chutney. That's about it. I think I'll need to invest a bit of time to search the internet for inspiration...

    Quince

Every year we have an abundance of walnuts, apples, pears, prunes, cherries, persimmons and other fruits and nuts. But there are 2 fruits that almost never give a good harvest: our quince and our fig. The quince suffers from a fungus that we never managed to get under control. And the fig just...

    A Clock work Orange

Although I do agree wholeheartedly I strongly suggest to leave politics out of this forum. It is way too valuable as a source of information, learning and entertainment (e.g. that really fantastic thread on threading or your thread on your wonderful lake-side spot) to be spoiled by such things...

Two Items With the Same Function

It might be just my weird way of thinking. But my first thought was toilet paper rolls. :giggle:

    Photography: lubricating a tripod ball+socket.

I used PTFE spray on the ball and socket of the tripod I use for my Stabila laser level. For my type of use this worked great. Maybe it will in your case too?

    A roof in Sweden

One thing to remember is that Swedes are not really known for properly maintaining their houses. It is not unusual for them to wait until the boards on the facade (underbrädor, lok and knutbrädor) start to rot and then just pull off the boards and replace them. And please don't get me started...

    A roof in Sweden

Ha, if I had known you could have had mine. I removed tons of them from my roof this summer when I replaced the old sheets with new ones. Look for takläkt next time you are at a byggmarknad (ströläkt and bärläkt are often made from tryckimpregnerad trä). I don't really like the quality of what...

    A roof in Sweden

That looks like tryckimpregnerad trä, which translates to pressure impregnated wood. The green sheen makes me think so. And indeed, that is mostly made from spruce.

    A roof in Sweden

Yeah, they do that a lot out here. I really had to convince the contractor to make one for the new extension I am almost finished building. In the end we built one made of leca blocks (they use those a lot in Sweden) that we plastered over. You can find those posts with steel straps in almost...

    Persimmon

I think you are right. Sadly, the only thing I can dig up in the documentation I have is that it is a Diospyros. No details on which cultivar it might be.

    Persimmon

Wow, so they get that big? I didn't know. I have one in my garden, but that tree is just 3 meters high. The trick to picking the fruits is to wait until the first frost has gotten to them. After that they will taste a lot better and be easy to get off the tree. Don't wait too long after that...

Mike builds a teardrop (hatch detail)

What an inspiring thread. 👍 But also, what a daunting task you gave yourself. This project in itself is more than enough work, but then you put in all that time to document it as well. On both counts respect! No even a serious mishap with your leg could stop you from doing this. Not sure I...

    That time of year again.

Well, I read a report by a nature conservation organisation that predicts all spruces around here will be gone in 50 years time. The drought itself is a serious problem of course, but it also gives insect more of an opportunity to harm the trees. In recent years an incredible amount of trees...

    That time of year again.

Unless I am very much mistaken that is the husk of a sweet chestnut. Many trees around here have started shedding their leaves to protect themselves from the drought for about a month now. Things are getting crazy even in this country used to handling a surplus of water. But water shortage is a...

    Another pet gone...

There's no shame in crying when you loose a good friend. And that's what pets are. They will be there for you no matter what. Often times they are much better friends than people will ever be. Even some you thought you knew well, I am sad to say. Think back on all the good memories you made...

Mike builds a teardrop (hatch detail)

What a wonderful result. I never even knew this type of fiber cloth existed. Incredible how much better the wood pops out at you after you applied the epoxy. Thanks for showing us this is possible. I am sure this knowledge will come in handy sometime in the future.

Mystery Project or Future Firewood ?

Parts for a chair? (I realise they are thin, but there could be some support structure.) [Edit] Oh, wait, now I see the ovals. Not a chair then...

    Lodgers...

If it is the same white powder that is used here, then it doesn't really matter. The powder will be transported deeper into the colony by the animals themselves when they return and will "infect" the rest of the colony quite effectively. In my experience it will take one or two days before all...
