• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Found This Piece, (yes), At The Dump

It's only my personal opinion but I'm not surprised that was at the dump... Trying to find something positive to say, it could be that all that paint is better than rust and might be easier to strip away, leaving a potentially useful saw. I'm sure you could patch the abused handle. At least...

Found This Piece, (yes), At The Dump

I'd say just resist that demon. I know there are plenty of YouTube restoration videos where all the original finish gets stripped off and replaced but to me that's the equivalent of a wrinkly old guy wearing a wig and trying to look like a teenager. Your scraper clearly works properly as it is...

    The Niff-Naff Cabinet; door hinging!!

Like Ian, I don't think I could adapt to work like that, but it's fascinating to watch you patiently achieving the standards you set yourself.

VFD to run 3-Phase on Single phase supply

If you want a bit more guidance than the excellent answers above, I'd like to mention that this forum used to have a resident motor expert, Bob "9fingers" Minchin. He wrote a guide to motors which covers three phase to single and inverters. It's in a Dropbox, linked to from the forum. Use the...

Every workshop needs a Workmate or two. The proper Ron Hickman sort like Rob's, not a present day pale imitation.

A small project with a difficult joint

Almost total! But it really looks the business, lovely job. Your workspace must be getting very distinctive and personal.

    The Niff-Naff Cabinet; door hinging!!

Well, I know this is a radical approach to a glue up and those glue blocks are nifty, but full credit to the C4 journalists for sending a film crew to Salisbury to cover the event for the world! 🤣

Maybe you're ahead of the crowd, using West African timber in the temperatures it's used to!

As the US finishes celebrating 250 years, here are my oldest hand planes.

According to Goodman's Planemakers, Peter Kirk and Son were trading in Sheffield between 1841 and 1871.

I do so agree! I have a few planes of similar vintage and am always pleased to find a reason to use them.

    Reclaimed bookcase - finished

Now delivered. 🙂 One shelf has a little bit of cardboard on top of a bracket. To be fair, I don't think the brackets were originally matched to the strips and I did have to grind away some steel here and there to make them usable.

    Reclaimed bookcase - finished

Thanks Tony, I see what you mean. I'll check tomorrow but I think I must have just not pushed the shelf down properly. If the lower shelves are straight, then the top one can be too.
