• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Glut of soft fruit.....tip for keeping fresh

Makes sense. We had several hard frosts in May.

Glut of soft fruit.....tip for keeping fresh

Thanks for the tip. Our soft fruit is way down on previous years. Not enough water I think (plus the raspberry beds could probably do with digging out and restarting). Hardly any apples coming in our little orchard either. I think late frosts might be the culprit.

    Possible New Project - Trophy

Thanks. One handle on each side I think.

    Possible New Project - Trophy

Yes, that's right. I don't want winners to be reluctant to take the thing home with them through fear of breaking it, so thought the box was necessary.

    Possible New Project - Trophy

I finally got round to (almost) finishing this. I needed to find an unobtrusive way of securing the spoons (in their box) to the base. I decided two loops of thin elastic (the stuff I bought is called hat elastic) would be the best option. These are just fed through small holes in the raised...

A small project with a difficult joint

    That looks perfect.

Post a photo of the last thing you made...

Funnily enough I’m making a plywood box (or trying to anyway) at the moment!

I was literally just looking at that stuff and thought it looked good!

    Cutting brass door knob

I think you should be alright if you go carefully with the hacksaw and files. Having seen your skills with wood, I think you'd end up with a square end. The end wouldn't be seen so the finish presumably isn't critical, but you could sand any file marks out and polish it if you want to. You'd...

The Benefits Of A Hobby After Retirement

I think hobbies have played a huge part in my wellbeing (mainly mental). They meant retiring (very early by most standards) was something I relished rather than dreaded.

    Now for the Chairs

Great to hear that you're back it. Your beautiful chairs are crying out to be finished and put to good use!

    Church Noticeboard

I think you're right that I could make it a [bit] bigger. It faces north which, as far as the sun goes, is helpful.

    Church Noticeboard

Thanks. I've got the t&g in a groove in the bottom, but you're right it would be better to run them all the way down. That raises two questions: 1. How would the t&g be held in place? Presumably with a single pin (brass) in each board? 2. Should I also run the t&g all the way to the top as...

    Church Noticeboard

Here's the first design: Hopefully the pictures make the proposed joinery fairly clear. I wondered about dovetailing the carcass, but have tried to reduce the amount of end grain on show for weather reasons. The back is t&g and I'll endeavour to leave enough space for expansion, and...

No need for any apologies! Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I'm going to have a go at drawing something up and will no doubt be back for advice...
