• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Not sure if this is the place to post this. But, I rather like not getting out my electrical tools (par [or is it, 'bar'!] the humble cordless drills) too often. They have their uses but I quite enjoy the journey and every day is a school day. Besides, hand tools won't chop my arm off as quickly.

So being on my whatever number of hand-grooving, it occurred to me that maybe there is such a thing as 'cheap/er paring chisels'. Currently been getting sharp and slowly digging away, but using some of these for paring - less noise and alot of the time I'm woodworking in some illegal corner of the house at unsociable hours - really does hurt my hand.

If anyone knows of what used paring chisels to look out for that wouldn't break the (very limited) bank (balance). Not sure why its all become bold letters all of a sudden either, sorry!
 
Try Facebook market place, I've just picked up a great Sheffield Steel chisel for a fiver.

I keep looking at them. But the price for me is restrictive. Paring chisel would hopefully give me more options and easier to store. Trying to keep things as compact as poss for my messy shed.

Make your own. A hag's tooth router plane isn't much more than a 1/4" chisel bashed through a piece of wood at 45 degrees. You can buy nice old ones for £10 or £15 on Ebay or Facebook Marketplace...but they're a doddle to make.
 
Aha, thanks all. I'd watched a Sellers video on the topic a year or so ago but never thought myself inclined towards making one.

I'll check some more tutorials and maybe get it made. Only a block of wood and my 8mm chisel afterall!
 
Yep, Paul does a video on making a plough plane using a chisel as an iron. He's good.... a proper old school time served Joiner.

Agreed. I've decided to use some of my sycamore tree (maybe not the best option) to make a bells/whistles version as per the Rex Kruger vid. Once this current drawer/grooves are done I shall focus on that next. Thanks so much.
 
Brand new member here.. Keep in mind.. I haven't touched a serious piece of woodwork since shop class in high school (USA) in 36 years, so take my input with a grain of salt, as I am just now building out my hand toolset, although I actually am planning to go mostly the power tool route.

That being said... Just last night, I picked up 19 Sheffield Steel chisels, a NOS (New Old Stock) No 5 Record Jack Plane, and a wood/brass Marples Marking Guage off of Ebay UK for about 125£ total last night. Got yourself a right dwal there. I know you're going power tools, but give that number 05 a nice sharpen and you'll love it. Very nice chisels indeed.

If you mean this one, I think it might be quite a bit older than the others. It's hard to be sure of dates with chisels but I'm pretty sure that the very long shoulders indicate that that's an earlier one.

Yesterday I put up a "Heads Up" post for the forthcoming stock for Lidls Parkside chisel set for £7.99 on sale from the 16th April in a Lidls store near you... Last August they were £16.99 OR £12.99 if you had the Lidls Plus app so I paid £12.99 last year...

Makes no difference to me what to use them for at £7.99

Shafiq, why not consider making a router plane. PS has a kit with all the metal bits required and the plans can be downloaded.
Take a look at this video -
the link for the kit is on there.
I made one a while back and it works well.
