• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Sausages

I can't allow a conversation on this topic without including the obligatory Yes Minister clip I'm also a big fan of decent British sausages but we're lucky to have an excellent butcher very close. My parents recently moved from this area down to East Sussex and my father regularly bemoans...

Well, that day didn't go to plan.

Oh no! Sorry to hear that Mike. I hope your rate of recovery is as fast as your normal rate of work.

Like the ocean under the moon

This afternoon I've made the rest of the metal hardware. I started with an extremely simple bit of brass turning, to make this little cylinder: That goes in this hole and gives a smooth rotating surface for part of the adjuster mechanism to spin in: Next up were three steel pieces. I...

Are all NVR switches the same?

The only likely difference might be current rating, but I'd expect that two that look the same externally would be likely to have a similar rating. In my (limited) experience, when NVR switches start being "dodgy", it's usually corroded contacts as a result of arcing due to being connected to...

This morning I've been making the hardware to go with the lever cap, but first I decided I wanted a larger thread for the clamping screw. I put an M8 screw in the mill's collet chuck and screwed the lever cap onto it and that allowed me to put it in the vice in such a way that the hole was...

Like the ocean under the moon

Today's been a bit of a "bitty" day with lots of sessions in the workshop and various unrelated obligations in between. Nevertheless, I'm pleased with the progress I've made. The project for today was to work on the lever cap. It started off as this length of 10 × 50 mm 304 stainless steel...

What does a Request Timeout mean on Ping test, Now Starlink,

Starlink is £35/month for 100 Mbps (£25 for the first six months) and is presumably available where you are if you don't mind giving money to Musk.

I've reground the tip of (and hence shortened slightly) one of the blades and resharpened it. I'll do the other two another time. I also put the lever cap back in the mill vice and extended the slot by 5 mm: With those two modifications made, the blade can be fully retracted (with room to...

What does a Request Timeout mean on Ping test, Now Starlink,

When we last changed broadband provider there was no landline option so we ditched it then. Instead we bought a very cheap android mobile and got a pay-as-you-go SIM that has a minimum usage of "some chargeable use" every 3 months. That's mounted on the wall (and plugged in to a charger...

Like the ocean under the moon

This week felt like a long one, despite being only three days of work. As a result, I had a very slow start to the day and, after a walk out for lunch, I finally made it to the workshop at about 2pm. Having finished the lower surface of the brass opening, I could start working on the front of...

So it is Spring now, for me it's still Winter

There are loads of bluebells in the woods behind our house at the moment. Incredibly hard to get a good photograph (not helped by using a hand held phone rather than a proper camera on a low tripod), but I took this quick snap on the walk this morning. In a week or two the woods will be even...

Lovely job Nick and really quite inspiring to read. You are most definitely not the only one there!

    Modern cooking — a rant.

Well, maybe one day I'll be brave enough. Ideally I'd wait for my other half to order it & just have a taste to see what I thought, but she's allergic to eggs so that'll never happen!

    Modern cooking — a rant.

I've had carpaccio before and enjoyed it a lot (and ditto sashimi). I'd be willing to try steak tartare if the egg was omitted but the idea of the raw egg puts me off completely. Mayonnaise is fine as it's beaten enough to not have the texture of raw egg. I don't eat eggs with a liquid yolk...

Like the ocean under the moon

This morning was a bit dull if I'm honest. I started by hacksawing off the excess on the home-made screw: The body then went in the jaws of my portable workbench (to raise it up a bit and save my back) for the heads of the screws to be filed down: I used a couple of punches (one with a...

Thank you Andy & no, I didn't know any of that. I picked brass for the simple reasons that it's tougher than wood but a heck of a lot easier to work than steel. My little block plane has a brass sole as well & I was just doing the same thing without thinking about it much. I have no plans for...

Like the ocean under the moon

Before cutting the slot in the brass, I thought I'd do a little 5:1 pencil sketch to work out the size of the slot at the bottom and also how far ahead of the bottom of the beech slot the hole needs to be. I did the calculations based on 3 mm thick brass (rather than 3.2 mm) to allow for any...
