• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    What I have fixed today

I had my plumber round to fit a dual-fuel radiator in the en-suite complete with thermostat. I was too busy with the builder to check before he left but didn't have any concerns as he's done a lot of the plumbing in the house OK. I eventually checked it out. Not only did my (now ex-) plumber...

    Extra length on window components

LOL...I see the confusion. I only ever made sash windows so horns were de rigeur (usually).

    Extra length on window components

Windows wrote this... If you don’t do this and instead cut directly to final length, there’s a risk that minor inaccuracies will make the pieces too small by a few mm which will either look poor or require a patch/filling. Which placed his emphasis on measurement. I also tend to think of...

    Extra length on window components

You made the assumption that the horns are subsequently cut off. That's not usually the case.

    Extra length on window components

Dan, I’m not sure that that was what he was referring to. I think he was referring to slightly oversized stiles that get trimmed at the end on site. Said stiles being oversized to give some protection against dings during transit. Not to do with inaccuracy in cutting to the right length.

They look to be of the plated variety. Of course there are all the other screws holding the hinge to the gate.

    Keeping out water?

There are three pegs used for the top rail which is an assembly which you might expect. Photos not brilliant but you can just about make out the wedge lines of the component pieces. Reliant on glue for the most part. They are NOT through tenons and so any water running down those verticals...

    Keeping out water?

I'll have a closer look and report back. I didn't see any pegs TBH. These are single bolts going through to the hinges.

    Keeping out water?

Neighbour has just had these gates installed so I went for a nose. The verticals go into a mortise..not sure if it goes through or not. I got to thinking if there was a better way to do it as I could see water tracking down very easily. Certainly if it wasn’t a through mortise then that...

On the subject of names, Siemens galactic HQ ordained that with immediate effect all switchboards across the world would answer incoming calls with Siemens <wherever>. As in Siemens Berlin. There was one entity that refused to do this. Care to guess where?

Staying with the spirit of the thread, London black cab drivers were a mine of great experiences. One recalled the time he saw an old guy and with his pet dog waiting for a cab. He stopped and the guy and dog got into the back whereupon the old guy promptly put the dog on the back seat...
