• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Timothy Taylor’s and Saltaire spring to mind!

They all look great but I particularly like the top one.

    Trading Wherry 'Lady Garnet'

I caught up with this a few evenings ago Don - another interesting update. You need to invest in some toe-tector type footwear for when you are moving those big lumps of timber around!

    Xmas

I’ll defer to those with more culinary knowledge but I think you are too late for this year!

    Xmas

I don’t know anything about the science or methodology but a good gravy definitely makes a big difference.

    eBay listings and bladed items

It’s also interesting that the document references the licensing scheme already introduced use in Scotland. https://www.gov.uk/find-licences/knife-dealers-licence-scotland This seems to have a much more sensible focus: “You don’t need a licence to sell knives designed for domestic use (eg for...

    Peter Follansbee (and other) carving

I also surprised myself with these. They are the ends for a shelf commissioned by my daughter in law. The original plan was to keep them plain but I suggested adding some carving… and then had a sense of dread when she liked the idea. I didn’t over think it (which I often do) and just...

    Peter Follansbee (and other) carving

Delayed by other commitments but finally got the lid carving done … I need to put a bevel on the face of the lid before fitting it. I need to decide which hinges to use as I don’t want to follow Follansbee’s method of crafting hinges from nails.

    Xmas

First one with a granddaughter - even though she won’t have a clue what is going on it does make it feel a bit more special. Everyone is coming “home” for Christmas and Boxing Day so it’s going to be mayhem!

    Best Tape Measure

As I've aged I've found being able to easily read measurements a bit more of a chore. My tape measure met with an accident and I decided to do a bit more research than I would have in the past primarily to find one that is easier to read and ended up going with this ... It's brilliant. It...

How much to make these ?

Slightly different as it's a hobby for me but on the same theme ... I reluctantly agreed to make a jewellery box for a "friend" of a friend and let him jump the queue as apparently it was needed urgently for a gift. For people I like I just look for reimbursement of the cost of materials and...

Oak dining table build (complete, and inside)

That carving takes an already outstanding piece of work to another level. FWIW Chris Pye uses photo mount spray to secure paper patterns.

How much to make these ?

I read ‘“None of that can be billed to anyone” literally. Apologies if I misinterpreted your post Steve.

How much to make these ?

Not sure where you did your MBA Steve but you should be asking for a refund. Those are real costs and need to be reflected in the pricing of any business. Competitive advantage comes from being able to marginally price once those costs are covered. Many business failures though stem from...

    Is It Just Me?

I think an atelier is different to just being a workshop in that it encompasses design, manufacture and training of new artisans. My understanding is based on the late David Savage’s blogs when he declared Rowdean to be an Atelier.

Post a photo of the last thing you made...

A bloke down the pub asked me to make him a firewood store … I’m looking forward to getting back to hardwood as that tanalised stuff is horrible!

    Coopering

They are independent Ian. The master cooper is ex Sam Smiths and then worked for another firm before branching out on his own. I guess that the growing number of micro-breweries and distilleries has created more of a market for independent coopers.

    Coopering

I went up to Scawton Sawmill this morning and spotted that they have let out one of their sheds to a cooper. The master cooper was very happy to let me take a look at their work but unfortunately they weren’t firing any new barrels today. Hopefully coopering won’t be replaced by AI!
