• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Nailing Feather Edge Horizontally

I am making a log shelter for a neighbour which will be clad with 150mm feather edge boards. The boards will be horizontal and my initial thought was to fix it with a nail through the board into each of the uprights of the frame so it will be under the overlap of the board above. Does this...

Sending multiple emails to one recipient

It works on my work laptop but doesn’t on my personal one so must be something to do with the Office versions! The alternative is to start a new email in a new window, open the folder you want to send, highlight all the items and then drag/drop them into the new email. Each email becomes an...

    John’s workshop

John, I’d be thoughtful about dividing up the space with an extra wall. On the plus side, as you say, it gives more wall space but the resulting two spaces are going to be quite small. Lots of good woodwork does get done in small workshops but it can add some challenges.

The inevitable is sadly upon us…

I don’t think there is a right or wrong way Mark. We went down the cremation route which I think made it a bit easier than bringing the body home for burial. The ashes were collected from the vet a week later and buried in the garden and a bush planted on top.

The inevitable is sadly upon us…

Sorry to hear that Mark. We went through much the same thing at the start of the year and it’s horrible making the decision even though you know it’s the right thing to do. They are part of the family. Thankfully it’s the happy memories that pervade but it’s a sad process getting there.

    Peter Follansbee (and other) carving

I cracked on with the end faces of the box this morning … Still room for improvement but I’m quite pleased with how they have been turned out. A lapse in concentration meant a bit of blow out but thankfully it was quickly sorted with a drop of wood glue.

    Blood (without the gore!)

I haven’t noticed Adrian but have been told biological and physiological differences mean women are more prone to be deferred due to low iron/hemoglobin so wonder if this may be something to do with it. Apparently for some transfusions male blood is preferred as generally we have higher iron...

    Peter Follansbee (and other) carving

Has anyone else had a go at a Follansbee type carving and found it’s A LOT harder than it looks or is it just me? My first attempt was in oak but it seemed to be very unforgiving and brittle. It was kiln dried and had been sat in the workshop for some time. I am wondering if it was “too dry”...

    Mouseman

The octaganal table of that design is currently on sale in their shop at a price of £1,250 if anyone wants one. I think it’s great that they are still making (by hand) the items their founder made.

Houston - we have a problem

I think you will find that is referring to vehicles on the public highway. As the problem here is on private land the Police are unable to issue a Penalty Charge Notice and will simply say it’s a civil matter between the landowner and the the person who has a right of access.

Houston - we have a problem

What a PITA! Is there any signage that shows the respective role of those involved in doing the work Roger? Assuming the person you reference is working for a firm of architects or building consultants I think my approach would be to deliver a letter to them politely pointing out your...

Scientists create ‘Superwood’ that’s 10 times stronger than steel

I’m not sure this is a new invention. Accsys Technologies are a UK/Netherlands firm that have been leading the way.

    A tale of two airports

Macquarie are currently buying Bristol Airport. Given their great track record in looking after Thames Water I’m sure drainage and plumbing will be quickly sorted.:oops:
