• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Multico morticer chuck conversion saga

One of those jobs that should have been quick. My K3 hollow-chisel morticer used an awkward mounting system: each size of auger bit needed its own collet for the sleeve on the motor shaft. You’d have to line up the hole in the collet with the retaining screw, then steer the bit into the collet...

    Alaskan milling, ‘carport’, roof trusses

Just to show I don’t spend all my time on here yakking about sausages and fish recipes, here’s the start of filling in the gap in my U-shaped workshop, ex-stables. It’ll have a clear roof and be more of a covered yard: The post supports can only keep the uprights in place on the ground; they...

    White “Faskut” saw

I might have a chance to get one of these, but I can’t find much info about it. 36” blade and roller feed. Here’s a restored one: Taken from: http://www.ricknolan.co.uk/classic-woodwork-machines.html The one I’ve seen (on a quick video taken by a mate) has had the motor removed and been...

    Simple bar stool design

A mate of mine, who drives a harvester, is going to give me some timber in log form (and has already given me a HUGE amount of beef). In exchange, he wants me to make him two bar stools from Larch, which will also be provided in log form. Now, a bar stool needs the legs to be angled outwards in...

    Spindle moulder fence

Still looking for a one-piece or horse shoe fence, ie the type normally fitted on most machines. To fit the old Cooksley, about the size of a Wadkin EQ, obviously with some adaptations: The two separate fences in slots are a bit of a nuisance.

    SCM T110 spindle moulder shaft

I have this 1.25” shaft from my old spindle moulder (L’Invincibile!) hanging about. Any idea how much it’s worth? I could probably take it down to 30mm if that would make it more desirable.

Modifying roof trusses to increase height for a two-post lift

Here is the area. If you start counting at the back truss, above the doorway, I need to remove all members of trusses 2 and 3 (ideally 4 as well, but not essential), apart from the top rafters. The roof is box profile with ply underneath. Approximate position of the trusses arrowed: Looking...

Woodshop extended - machine placement advice, please

This is a former stables, now extended as shown roughly by the hatched areas. The South 2.0m/door/4.2m wall was brought outwards, and the original open-fronted tack room at the East end has been incorporated. There will be no more horses; I loved working with them, just wouldn’t own one...

    Fish recipes

There’s a good local boat here that comes in and sells direct to the public. Sadly, all they’re used to supplying is skinless, vac-packed fillets, mainly cod and haddock. I’m apparently the only weirdo wanting whole, ‘interesting’ fish. After quite a few weeks of cajoling, they’ve started...

Fitting windows into a shiplap wall

Here’s a pic from when I first moved some machines in, to give an idea: The inner lining is 11mm OSB, then 95x45mm studs, then 15x137mm shiplap. I’m quite happy making some simple swinging windows in a frame, but not sure how to do the opening correctly, so that water doesn’t cause problems...

    Pork scratchings theory

Two parts to this: For crackling, I usually slow roast the pork belly, cut the skin off, then stick it in the air fryer. Some areas are perfect, expanded almost like a hard, crispy foam, other areas go hard and tough like plastic. I haven’t been able to work out why, but the method is more...

Wadkin 9”FS planer and Wilson 14” rip saw

This is what happens when you sign in to FB marketplace after 10 years or so: Wlson saw: can’t find much about them. 14” blade, rip fence and no tilt. The blade is in excellent nick, and it and the DC brake are worth more than the saw itself. I might convert the motor to dual voltage and...

    Omelette theory

What I thought of as an omelette, is apparently a ‘country-style’ version, briefly: - Fairly hot pan with butter - Lightly whisked eggs in. From time to time, push ruffles in from the edge - Fold over and leave till required done-ness. The result is quite a firm and spongy thing, slightly...

    Big bandsaw needed

New territory for me. I could do with a decent-sized one, mainly for ripping timber, sawing up follower templates for the spindle, making cabriole legs. I tried to make a jig to make the latter on the spindle with follower bearing, but it was a bit hair-raising for me. Not sure what a...

    What are these spindle cutters?

Offered free on the mig forum. The right-hand one is fairly straightforward - no writing, but 120x6x30 groover with HSS knives. Left hand one - not so sure. There are no features on the back, and just those two carbide nickers. Also, 1.25” bore and too thin for my top hats. I’m inclined to...

Moving house - spindle moulder dilemma

One for @Trevanion or other spindle moulder types. I’ll be moving to house to one with a bigger workshop soon - actually, a former stable yard, so may be asking opinions about workshop layout - but it hasn’t got three phase. I like my big Cooksley spindle moulder, but there are a few problems...

    Options for custom spindle profile

I’ve been asked to replicate this profile, which is a trim piece attached to the bottom of the fascia board, under the gutter. Quite a long run (quite a big house). It seems to be ex. 62x50mm, and the profile depth is about 36mm. Too big for a B blank knife in one go. Profile design tooling...

    Frame and panel wall panelling

I’m toying with the idea, one day, of using my frame-and-panel spindle moulder cutters to make up some wood panelling for a wall. The cutters are the profile/scribe type that do the long moulding (ogee) and end-grain with one setting of the machine, with a third cutter to raise the panels. The...

    RAS vs mitre saw technique

One for the likes of Trevanion, perhaps. https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/ra ... st-1696449 My contention is that a RAS is pulled towards the user (with stiff arm technique), whereas a SCMS is lifted over the work, brought down, and pushed away. Climb and conventional cutting...

    Ultrasonic meat tenderising

Hi all. Not been on for a while, as there’s not been much woodworking of note going on here. There are a few experimental foodies on this forum: I’ve recently bought a cheapish 15L ultrasonic cleaner, and it’s occurred to me that it might be useful for tenderising meat (not cooking, as the...
