• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Simple bar stool design

My SIL had a nice wooden rotating cake stand, for decorating, that had a warped top. I was able to tap the top free and run it through the drum sander (another machine of course). It was based around a bearing arrangement much like that^^^

    Simple bar stool design

Thanks for the suggestions. I should point out that I’m a soul-less wood machinist! Mortices on the Multico K. Spindle moulder: T&G for the seat; for the aprons, cock bead cutters or template and follower bearing for arches. Possibly pre-cut on the bandsaw. Seat roundover. Slots in aprons to...

    Simple bar stool design

A mate of mine, who drives a harvester, is going to give me some timber in log form (and has already given me a HUGE amount of beef). In exchange, he wants me to make him two bar stools from Larch, which will also be provided in log form. Now, a bar stool needs the legs to be angled outwards in...

    Disappointing car, great neighbours

Range Rover Classic, of course! Very nice.

    Disappointing car, great neighbours

I think some of it is tech for tech’s sake, or to keep up with the Joneses, ie other car makers. They haven’t (yet) given us braking-by-wire, but just imagine the consequences…

    Disappointing car, great neighbours

Horn wiring old and new (slightly embellished): Old: Switched wire to horn. New: Power is sent from the Body Control Module to the Horn Control Module (HCM; £300), which also receives a CANBUS connection that likes to rub itself on the edge of a poorly-grommeted hole. Horn sounding is...

    Multimeter / s

I have a Fluke 87V, which is reliable but not value for money. In your case, a UNI-T meter might suit. They seem to balance price and quality nicely for the occasional user. I have their clamp meter for AC and DC. I’ve tested it against the Fluke and it does pretty well.

My Favourite Sandwich - Yes a lame post.

Red Dwarf-inspired triple fried egg, cheese, chilli and chutney sandwich (y) “Like a combination of food and bowel surgery”. It’s actually very good.

    Spindle Moulder Fence material

My first spindle moulder had warped extruded fence pieces like that. I put them through the drum sander, convex side up first, then flipped them over. After that, some wooden pieces on top, as they’re easier to screw things to, eg a false fence, or outfeed extensions if the whole face is being...

    Spindle moulder fence

The Cooksley only cost £360 or so, with a decent Europa power feed!

    Spindle moulder fence

Still looking for a one-piece or horse shoe fence, ie the type normally fitted on most machines. To fit the old Cooksley, about the size of a Wadkin EQ, obviously with some adaptations: The two separate fences in slots are a bit of a nuisance.

    Coopering

I bought an SCM T110 spindle moulder from a cooper. Here are the knives he was using - 100mm tall and two different, opposing curvatures: I also buy tonne bags of old whisky barrel lids for firewood, which have a very nice smell when cutting and burning. These are joined together with some...

    Interesting power line safety

The earthing straps would also be there in case someone starts up a generator and back-feeds the grid. There are some fascinating vids on helicopter linesmen, flying up to half-million volt lines, offering up a wand to the line as they approach. This is to take the arc as the heli’s potential...

What does a Request Timeout mean on Ping test, Now Starlink,

They’re in Bracknell and Ebbw Vale, but have no problem providing internet all the way up here, so you should be ok. It’s their solving of problems that sets them apart, for me. Now, initially, my fibre internet was going down between about 6pm and 11pm every day. Once, it was off all night and...

What does a Request Timeout mean on Ping test, Now Starlink,

Up here it was quite complicated - one team to brought the fibre to the main road, another took it past the house, then Openreach themselves made the actual connection to the ONT. If you’re looking for a decent ISP, I can strongly recommend Andrews & Arnold, a small independent. Tech support is...

What does a Request Timeout mean on Ping test, Now Starlink,

Good stuff. Best solution for ADSL problems is to ditch it, as I’ve found as well. It’s basically a bodge job, trying to piggy-back complex signals onto an ageing, corroding network that was never designed for it. My internet connection varied between crap and non-existent. I must have had 5...

What does a Request Timeout mean on Ping test, Now Starlink,

I had this a year ago, struggling with ADSL. If you’re on the MIG forum, try ‘pinging’ a chap called Qwakers - he does this sort of thing for a living, and analysed my router and connection all the way from Cornwall! My travails with BT tech support are documented there too. I spent days trying...

    Interesting YouTube electrical fault video

It looks like you’re in that limbo, job too small for an electrician, maybe too big for you. A serious lack of tradies up here means there’s little point in contacting one. They won’t turn up. So I often ‘go it alone’, but I do have decent test gear. I wouldn’t say your job is too far different...

Why I don’t do car engine maintenance any more

I would get that changed, which I think would require removing the timing chain. At the very least, I’d be dropping the sump to inspect and clean the oil pump pick-up strainer.
